I’ve been calling in the Dunn co. area and haven’t had succes in about 12 sittings about 30-45 min. sits. but I usually call the same places because I am limited because I’m not sixteen until february. so far away place aren’t on the menu but if anyone has an idea of how much calling you can do in an area without blowing it for the whole year. I’ve been tryin a couple of different calls planning on getting some new ones with x-mas money so if you have any suggestions they would be appreciated. And if anyone in the area has heard or seen coyotes that I could possibly try to call send me a PM thanx

I will give a quick reply now and come back later with a more detailed one
Try to call an area maybe 1-2 times a week. Don’t use the same call all the time in the same area. It also makes a difference if you were “busted” or took a shot at an animal. I will get back to you with more info later. I am just heading out the door

    Okay I am back
Now as far as calling the same places over and over. Yes you can do it without ruining a spot to a degree. If you are going to the exact same spot and using the same call with the same cadence, you can and will burn it out in a hurry But, if this is a heavily wooded area and you go to the same general area a couple times a week, you should be alright. Just make sure to change up the calls.

Have you tried howling yet? Is a great technique that is a true producer all year long, but especially right now. Do a search for Rich Cronk or Cronks Custom Calls and try one of his cow horn howlers. Great calls they are. I never had much luck howling until I purchased a quality howler. Now it is a regular producer. I also like the higher pitched calls, like bird distress calls over the overused rabbit in distress stuff.

I am also a big fan of howling
This time of year do not add many barks with the howls as it tends to make more shy away. But by the middle of January and into February, you can add some barks in there without spooking too many coyotes. The more barks you add, the more of a challenge or territorial response you will get. This time of year I will make a short bark and then a long lonesome howl and repeat right away. I will then wait 5 minutes or so and either repeat or go into a distress of some kind. I am also going away from the rabbit distress in favor of birds, pup distress, or even the housecat sounds.

In my experience with howls, most times you will not get a response, like them howling back. I am not saying they never do, because sometimes they do. Confusing huh Most times I let out a lonesome howl. The lonesome howl is long and drawn out with very few barks before the howl. Later when the breeding season rolls around you can add more barks and shorter challenge howls. But, for a beginner, stick with the lonesome howl followed by distress sounds. I have had many times where all that was needed was the howl to bring coyotes in. After you howl wait at least 5 minutes to see if anything responds to the call. If after the 5 minutes nothing shows, begin the distress sound.
