I almost always head north and love fishing the fall. I will make a couple trips north in october.

In between, I am gonna really try to give time to southern prairie lakes in MN. How would you guys fish them? favorite lures for this fishing? I am planning cranks and plastics. thoughts?

Cranks to find them. A lot of those western and SW MN lakes fish like our eastern SD lakes. big loud baits in dirty water. Fall trolling is fun. Casting soft bottom shorelines can be a blast as well if the frogs are moving into the lake.

Funny yo mention the frogs. I have noticed more lately in my back yard. maybe I’ll have my boys go catch a bunch to use. Is this legal in MN?

Any timeframe or watertemp you typically see this frog to lake movement in E SD?

    frog to lake movement

Not sure of SD, but the first good cold fall rain I see large migrations. Been paying attention to this pattern a few falls now. Think they use it as good cover, especially at night!

No need to use frogs as bait, shallow stickbaits works just fine. Shallower the better and cover water. Eyes tend to roam the shorelines at that time.

I have had good luck at night fishing shorelines in the fall for walleye with top water scum frogs. It’s a blast when a pig eats one. I fish them very slow, just jerking them in place at times to call them in. It is even better when you can match this up with a full moon.

Someone needs to do a video on top-water walleye! grin

Guess I never searched it – something probably exists on Youtube

Well I’m going to start this targeting at night shallow. I’ve seen frogs running by my ponds lately in large numbers

My guess is this warm up may slow some of the migration but I’ll be headed out In The next few days. Hoping for a full day fishing on Monday. Thinking after 3 full days of south to SSE wind the north shores of a couple lakes I have picked out will be prime.

Alexandria Area has been a grind the last week. Pulling Husky Jerk’s/X-raps shallow (4-5fow). May have to shift back to Jigging raps deep. Hoping the shallow, fertile lakes get going soon. Lake Reno water temps at 62/63.

Made it out yesterday for a few hours in Meeker County. 65deg, murky, greenish water, trolling SR7’s in 12-14’. Connected with a couple nice overs. Tried jerkbaits in shallow, but only ended up with carp scales. Jerk minnows caught smallies in 8-10’ rocks.

Doubled down on the shallow bite – made a few pay the man. This weeks weather may back track the pattern.

Got quality over quantity today. This 28 incher was deep though. Nothing shallow for me today.

Full moon bite didn’t come together as hoped, still found a few good ones up shallow. Water was at 57. Can’t imagine this balmy weather accelerating things. HJ14’s and Shadow Raps
