Power Pro for panfish

Do any of you use Power Pro for crappie fishing? If you do which PP do you use and what knot do you find the best for tying the fluorocarbon leader on with?

I always sit in my trap so weather won’t be a problem. I am just confused with the different offerings that PP has.

Thanks for any and all comments!

If you insist on using braid for panfish, I would look at their Ice-tech line. You can get it in 5 and 8lb, both with 1lb diameter. I only use braid for certain applications with Walleye and Pike and always use a Fluoro leader. If you do use braid for panfish, I would also recommend you use some sort of mono or fluoro leader.

Palomar knot if tying directly to jig, Uni to Uni if tying leader.

    Thanks for the response.

I get the feeling it isn’t all that popular for the application I was inquiring about. I had noticed on YouTube a few were using it on crappies and it seemed to take some abuse.

I have been using #5 P-Line and a few times it just broke tying the knot. That’s why I have been looking for something different.

Braid is great for ice fishing. The smaller diameter reels lead to coiling-no issue with braid. If you are in deep water the no stretch is great for hook sets.
Most people just tie the leader to a swivel, the swivel reduces spin.
Suff does freeze up more but if you are in a shack its not an issue.

I’ve been using 4# Berkley nanofil low vis. green and tying direct. It’s my new favorite.

. X2 on the nanofil , great stuff . Ditched the pp on my summer rods and switched to nano also

3 or 4 pound suffix ice magic is about the best in my opinion and at less than 4 bucks a spool it’s hard to go wrong.

During the winter season, I fish with mono almost strictly, but as an aside, here’s a little story from last spring and what can be done if fish are aggressive… Not sure what I would’ve done if I’d needed to use more finesse, but some of these above scenarios might be options.

Fishing with a bass friend, all of my reels were still spooled up for basin panfish with 2# Cortland green mono. Having fished the weekend before with my brother, I should’ve known, but didn’t… So I am trying to fish weeds, wood, etc. with 2# mono and breaking everything off. Well the only option I had available (not in my boat), was to use my walleye rod with 10# – 2# diameter PP with 20# floro as a leader… Well all of a sudden we get into these bluegills and I have no choice but to use, so I tied on a 32nd oz. jig/kalin’s crappie scrubb and start catching gills 10+” and we caught them until dark!!! I used the same set-up the following Friday on my brother’s panfish lake and murdered them that night too…

I am not saying that I might have done better using the right stuff, but never underestimate the value of getting away heavier stuff that might just work. I also won the northern category on Rainy Lake while my buds were fishing 6# mono and getting bit off, I was catching as many walleyes and not loosing the toothy critters!!!

Most of my ice and open water reels are spooled with Power Pro.

I do have some ice reels that I stick with Flouro, other wise they have 4-8lb power pro.

For rods I use with anything other than small jigs, they have braid.

I join the lines with a uni to uni knot. This holds true on ice an open water. I have only had this know fail once, and it was more than likely a bad tie. It’s an easy knot to tie, even with cold hands in the wind. It works on anything from 2lb flouro to 20lb flouro.
