Power Draw Question

If I recall correctly, the owners manual says to hookup the pos and neg directly to the battery and the yellow to a switch that’ll power on the unit.

    I actually have 2 questions.

    1. Will the yellow trigger the unit to turn off as well?

    2. Is there any risk of power draw with the pos and neg hooked directly to the battery with the units turned off?

I’m in the middle of cleaning up the red neck rats nest in my boat and want to do it right.

I have gen 2 hds units if you were wondering.

    Thanks wave

Not sure which unit you are hooking up, but I usually hook my power cables to the “master” or “accessory” power switch. I have only used the red and black wires as well.
This way when the accessory or master power switch if off, there is no chance for a power draw. I don’t know for a fact the units with internal GPS have a power draw when “off”, but I do know that if you have an external puck, those will draw power when the GPS itself if OFF.

Exactly what I do and it works well. I do have two HDS gen 2 units with internal antennas and also a puck antenna. When I hit the Master switch its all off.

Also, yes the internal antennas will draw power even though your HDS is turned off, thus the master power switch.

Thanks for the help. That’s how it’s currently setup but I wanted to know if it was necessary or not. Now I just need to replace the splices with a bus bar.

    To add

The Sirius weather module, the radar module and the side imaging module all draw when the power to the head is off.

Interesting you say that. When setting all of this up I recall there being a yellow “trigger” wire for the LSS2. This means it needs to be powered on and isn’t triggered by the head unit at all.

I would have to imagine that there’s possibility for phantom draw from any electronic device connected to the battery.

I’m definetly hooking up a shutoff switch for my electronics.

    Thanks
