10lb power pro braid and 10-12lb Vanish floro leader. Spro 50lb swivel. Don’t over think it.

    Would 8lb work?

I would think 8 would be fine, just might have to be gentle with them, especially if they’re giants… And I’m talking straight monofilament. I’ve caught plenty of big walleyes on 6 lb mono — just can’t horse them.

I run 14 on my crankbait rod. 8 on my jigging set ups.

I know it’s not super clear water, so this might not make a ton of sense…

But last year I got the 2 biggest fish out of a group of 9 guys. I used 10lb power pro with a 4lb floro leader. All the guys gave me crap for using 4lb test on winnipeg. Until I was catching fish. Not one breakoff in 3 days fishing.

Crankbait rod on Winnipeg in February? Maybe I’m overthinking something though.

I really like no stretch braid particularly in deeper water to put the screws in them if I have to. Just started using it this year and as others have posted, had issues with it freezing up. Any tips or advice to resolve that?

Most of us have dedicated rods for ripping cranks. Mine is a 40” heavy action with a fast tip.

I ran 8lb Suffix braid and had no issues at all. I had another rod for fishing outside with 8lb mono as well.

Both worked fine for my time up there.
