Possession permits after wildlife vehicle collisions in MN

    Hi!

I’m a reporter with MinnPost, working on a story about how people can get possession permits for roadkill that they hit in Minnesota.

I’m wondering if anyone on this forum has experience with a wildlife collision, where they applied for a possession permit and were able to keep the animal. I’d be curious to learn how the process worked and what you thought of the experience. Feel free to reply here and we can connect via phone!

Happens every day. Every law enforcement officer in the state can issue the permits. No applications.

I witnessed a deer come out of a road ditch and run into the side of a car on a highway. The deer hit the right corner of the vehicle along the bumper. The der died on the spot and little damage done to the car. The driver was a woman. I stopped and checked things on the car out and then called the cops after asking the woman if she was wanting the deer. A highway patrol showed up within minutes, cleared the woman to leave and gave me a possession tag after I gave him my driver’s license. Pretty simple process.

Three years ago open day of deer season three cars of us hunters were leaving Rochester and found a nice buck still alive but with a broken back on a sidewalk well within the city limits. A call to the cops was made. A deputy sheriff was on his way to work and fielded the call. Same process…. one of the guys wanted the deer. The deputy shot the deer and gave the guy his permit. The sidewalk was along a parkway with lots of vegetation, so the deer got dragged off the sidewalk into the deep stuff and field dressed. The deputy stayed there until the deer was loaded and away we all went.

The process is pretty simple and straight forward as long as nothing fishy is evident.

Ava Kian I recommend starting with skunks and racoons. They are easier to hit when you are drunk. They taste like chicken I swear. Let them air out for at least 4 weeks hanging in your backyard shed before you boil and eat. The maggots will go away when you boil it.

I’m on the chisago county list where the sheriff will call if they have a fresh road kill.
Other then that you can call the non emergency line and get a permit for road kill

A guy in Eagan/Apple valley called in for a tag for a road kill deer that was fresh. They told him no, but where is it? He found out that they take them all and feed them to the tigers at the MN Zoo.

I used to take 5 or so a year. Quite a few people take them and feed them to their dogs as well.

That is an excellent idea. If I lived rural I would probably try to do that.

I personally haven’t but any rural sheriff’s department or state trooper should be able to help you out with a bunch of stories. It’s almost a daily occurrence this time of year.

Growing up in WI, some of the local deputies would tell people not to waste a phone call…just throw what you want in your truck and be sure the rest is out of the lane of traffic. There wasn’t any “legal” procedure anyone cared about on either end of the situation

She didn’t properly cite her source. Looks like of all the posts, she decided to use riverrats troll post. lol

    From the article:

In an online forum, one user wrote that they’ve acquired other forms of roadkill, like skunks and raccoons — though they didn’t need the possession permit.

It was me. I called her and gave an interview. It’s listed at the beginning. But only about deer. Not the others.
