Folks,
If you haven’t taken a guide trip for catfish or sturgeon it is common for the guide to do all the work except set the hook and reel in a fish. There are exceptions.. like when the person your taking Fishing actually knows how to cast a rod/reel/bait of that magnitude.
Friends who cannot cast get guide treatment. Friends who can, do all the work themselves with some coaching.
I encourage everyone to learn, some are not interested. Many are more interested in the Fishing knowledge I share.
When your chasing the upper class fish, Minor details matter in a large way. Often times people just cannot operate the equipment well enough to not cause problems on the cast, after all, if your bait placement isn’t absolutely correct then nothing is correct.
Just this past weekend I had a very content friend who could not operate a baitcaster. He reeled in a 19# channel and a 39# flathead. Quite content. Even handed him a rod to practice casting with while the other rods were fishing, he was content with me running the show.
I run into the same thing with leadcore and trolling. Not that easy to operate.
I’ve been taking friends and complete strangers fishing for free for several years. Learning all about what being a good guide takes. Every person is different, there are a lot who have a large learning curve, and no trip is the same. I don’t get bad reviews and always return trips.
To each their own.
Me personally have only paid for two guide trips, both with the same guide who happens to be an author of 3 Catfishing books. Each trip I paid for someone else to accompany me, they reeled in the fish, I quizzed the guide… So guide trips aren’t for everyone and for me they’re only learning opportunities. I think most come for the fish…
