I have not been able to find a concrete answer for the possession limit on Muskies specifically in WI. I see where the bag limit for most fish other than panfish is five but nothing specific to muskies I guess. If it is five bag would the possession then be ten, even for Muskies?

Possession limits for WI Muskie

Considering I am copying the DNR regs via a screen shot and can’t seem to make it bigger right at this time, the daily bag for musky is 1, thus your possession is 2 and minimum size is 40″.

jld look into the special regulations by county section to see if your lake has special regs. Ive seen some lakes with a minimum of 28″ and others high as 50″ for musky.
That section will save your but if your not familiar with the lakes.Fish one lake then the one 5 miles down the road could have different regs for certain species.October 11, 2017 at 4:51 am #1720132I believe all bodies of water have a 40″ min. Just had not seen anything about possession. We have a situation with a neighbor from IL. Very nice people and good neighbors but they keep every single fish they catch. They are well within in their rights and we have let it go because we want to keep a good relationship but thus weekend they(father and teenage son under 16) caught three legal muskies, all of which were kept. They then posted pics on-line. It made me think keeping 3 muskies may be putting them over a limit. I know they have caught 7-8 total for the summer. This is all under one legal license holder. Just wondering if I need to say, hey you may be over your possession limit you may want to get those pics off social media.
October 11, 2017 at 7:08 am #1720140He puts dead musky on social media… I’ll be he’ll find out soon enough
October 11, 2017 at 7:19 am #1720143One state wide same for possesion. You have to check lakes or rivers you are on. Some are going to be different for sizes. State wide is 40 but I know a few areas are different St. Croix is 50, and a few others are 50 inch.
Think Green bay and fox river are 54 minimum.
Musky steaks are good on the grill.

pool2foolInactiveSt. Paul, MNPosts: 1709October 11, 2017 at 10:12 am #1720190My understanding is that your total daily bag limit per angler is 1 fish of at least 40 inches. (there are MANY exceptions to the length, as stated above. Use the DNR website to search regs by lake).
WI defines possession limits as twice the bag limit (see page 9 of the current regulations under the heading “Seasons, Bag Limits, Length Limits, and Possession Limits”).
So, if they kept 3 in one day they were over the daily bag limit but not the possession limit.
If they kept 3 over a weekend of fishing they were within the law.
UNLESS Wisco regs have different bag/possession limits for non-resident kids who don’t need a license. I haven’t looked that far into their regs.
October 11, 2017 at 10:16 am #1720191if the possession limit is twice the daily bag limit, how is keeping 3 legal? The days do not accumulate, otherwise you could have 700 in possession come the end of the year,,,,
I could not find anywhere the bag limit for a non-licensed, under-16 angler.

Angler #1 and Angler #2 each catch 1 fish on Saturday, reaching their daily bag limits. The fish are cleaned and put in the freezer. Angler #1 catches another fish on Sunday. They now have 3 fish “in possession.”
I could not find anywhere the bag limit for a non-licensed, under-16 angler.
Nor could I, but didn’t look that hard. I’m guessing it’s the same as for a licensed, over-16 angler.

October 11, 2017 at 10:28 am #1720200I was under the impress that a person under age 16, any fish caught would go towards his father’s limit but someone I spoke with at work thought a non-licensed angler under 16 gets there own bag limit as well. I know when my son was under 16 ice fishing with me he could put out three tip-ups/lines but he had to handle and run those lines. I am not sure about the bag/possession limit for someone under 16.

No, the days do not accumulate.
Your bag limit is 1 per day.
Your total possession limit on any given day of the year is twice that number. 1 x 2 will always equal 2. Whether the fish were caught 100 days apart or 24 hours apart, that number is a constant.
October 11, 2017 at 10:44 am #1720209You’d hope if they are keeping them, they’d be eating them but then there is this…Wisconsin health officials recommend no one eat muskies once they reach 40 inches — the statewide minimum — because of mercury levels.” Did you notice if these neighbors happen to glow after dark?
I always say let muskies go and let them grow. I also love to eat fish and wonder what a musky steak on the grill would taste like. I guess I will never know because I won’t keep one to find out.
It is worth mentioning that there are a number of lakes in Wisconsin where muskies are almost over abundant. Harvest is encouraged, these waters rarely produce trophy are even large muskies.

I have a hard time understanding this as many guides won’t have their clients touch a rod until it has a fish to reel in… I don’t guide per say (don’t charge) but that generally applies in my boat.

Your neighbors are idiots.

We’ve been waiting with bated breath for post #2, Seth!
October 11, 2017 at 3:39 pm #1720334So, if they kept 3 in one day they were over the daily bag limit but not the possession limit.
He did say one weekend……but 1 day yes not legal….
October 11, 2017 at 5:07 pm #1720347I smell a troll… JD anyone?
That’s what I was thinking when I first answered it, but I checked him out and remember his handle from one of the other websites I used to frequent. I think he’s one of the good guys…
Again daily bag is 1 fish, then the possession is 2 so if there were two guys and two days they should have been under for the two days. And then as long as they stay under the two per person, they should be good.

I am missing something here? I don’t usually check into the site much during the summer but in the winter I am checking the site a couple of times a day.
pool2foolInactiveSt. Paul, MNPosts: 1709October 11, 2017 at 6:53 pm #1720370There was a user (banned now) by the name of JD Winston. I have no idea what about your post made someone ask if you were him.
Curious enough, I believe seth f above has also recently been accused of being JD.
October 11, 2017 at 8:00 pm #1720389how about you just go talk to your neighbor?
offer him a beer, be curious and friendly…”hey, i always let the muskies go when i catch them. what are you guys doing with those ones you keep?” follow the conversation from there and share a different viewpoint without preaching. beyond the legal limit issues, if they have a place on the lake now, they’re probably going to want to catch those fish when they’re 48″ instead of 40″ and just might be open to the idea of catch and release.October 11, 2017 at 8:24 pm #1720393how about you just go talk to your neighbor?

If you must know, go to the top of this screen and on the right upper corner just to the right of contact us, enter “JD Winston” in the box with the little magnifying glass to search and be prepared to be launched into another dimension.

[/quote]Be fun to fish with you. I suppose you set the hook also? It would be a blast to sit and only real in the fish. That’s end of game? No casting to a spot? Sit and wait until you hook it and then hand off pole?

My dad had a conversation with him a few years ago about this but nothing really changed. Like I said they are nice folks. He helps my dad get his boat and motor in and out of the river and is always willing to lend a hand. Don’t want to sour the relationship over a few fish. I like the idea of sharing the article about the mercury muskies, that may make him think twice. Thanks for all the input.
