Hello all. I am looking to acquire a portable shooting bench. I would prefer to just buy a commercial model. One that collapses or folds for transport and storage is preferable. Weight is not a hug deal, it wont be moved far when used. Anyone have any ideas or opinions? If I need to build one I will. Anyone have any written/drawn instructions? Also looking for suggestions on portable target holders/boards. I appreciate your time and consideration on these matters. — Rob

I have this one:

It works fine. It’s heavy, but I don’t transport it very far, just from the shed to the “range”. My model only came in black color, which sucks in the summer. I like the current color much better, I’ve been meaning to paint mine since the day I got it.
IMO, it works better when I use a set of sandbags rather than a cradle rest. The sandbags give it the additional weight that I think makes it steadier.
None of the portable benches that I’ve used are as good as a well-constructed wood bench that has proper weight to make it really solid. IMO you do give up a little in terms of rock solid steady support for the portable aspect of these benches, but if there’s no other option, then portable beats no bench at all.

Here’s a picture of my target stand. I think you can get the gist of how its made from it.
Using 1/2″ square steel tubing I cut the back legs at 40″ and the front legs at 32″. I drilled 5/16″ holes on all four legs at 1″ from the top and again at 29″. I used 5/16″ threaded rod and used a 5/16 flat washer to space the two front and back leg section. I use 28″ for the plywood [which also has two more layers out of sight behind so I can shoot pellets into this], but using just some cardboard cut to fit between the two rods with targets taped to it, clothes pins hold the target on the threaded rod nicely for larger guns. Clothes pins top and bottom rods for cardboard target backer. 4 small holes with hooks and some light chain as leg stops and…..there ya go.
I take this to the cabin and use it a lot either in the back yard or the garage. I have an old boat cushion that will hang behind the plywood as extra insurance against shoot-thrus with the pellet gun when I set this up in the yard. I take it to the gun club as well if I want to set up at 25 yards on the long range since a 25 yard backer isn’t present there at the club unless I use the pistol range, but then long guns are not permitted in the pistol range. Basically it’s just handier than heck.
I bought two 48″ length’s of square tubing and two 36″. A couple 36″ threaded rods, a bag of nuts and flat washers and you’re good to go. Without the hardware to mount the plywood this takes about 45 minutes of casual assembly time. The frame is super light without the plywood but not at all heavy with it.

February 14, 2020 at 7:33 pm #1915420M portable table is a led set from a portable table saw that has wide leg stance. I just mounted a plywood top and one of my old lead sleds. Works well for under 600 yards with little wind.
February 15, 2020 at 7:22 pm #1915569Thanks Randy. Well be shooting to a 1000 here. Baby Steps. Great set up, just cant leave set up all the time, thus portable. But can drive a truck right to the shooting area, and 4 wheelers to and from targets. Sweet. Im stoked.
