Hey guys just wondering what you do for lighting in your portables? I have been using a Coleman lantern but would possibly like to go with LED lights. I have seen the rope lights and have not been too impressed as the ones I have seen aren’t very bright. Just looking for different options. Also how are you guys wiring them in? Wires exposed or concealed in the frame? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

By far the best thing I ever did for lighting was to buy the 16’ adhesive backed roll of LED’s. I use it in a Eskimo Quick Fish, about a 3.5’ section adhered to a ½” plywood cut to 1.5” x 3.5’. I have Velcro strips that fasten it to the ceiling poles of the house and has more than adequate light, so much that I am concerned it may spook fish.

You will need to cut off a strip, expose the contacts and solder your wire to the contacts. I use an old flasher battery for power.

X2…. The LED strips are the way to go. But since the strip can become damaged, you can create LED strip lights with rigid housings from Super Bright LED.com.

They make a series of rigid bars with mounting clips that will allow you to take it off when not in use. My wiring is on the surface with some velcro attachment points on my frame running down to a 12v flasher battery.

If you don’t want to use the rigid housing, they sell lots of different parts to create just about any light you want.

I like to use bicycle LED lights. The clamp fits the piping to my Frabill.

I aim it to the ceiling behind me most of the time but when I really need it – it has a quick release. Another nice feature is that most have a strobe function. That comes in handy when your buddies are looking for your shack.

A good headlight that can dim very low is my #1 go-to.
I also use a clam fan/light. Fan is used quite often to push heat around. Light is not needed very often but it is adaquate.

    Overnights i’ll light a candle.

I always just use my headlamp, I normally just have the light from my flasher and heater, only turn the light on for dealing with fish or anything you actually want to see, I don’t like spooking fish.

Out of any lights I have used the clam led poke light puts out the most light. You do not have to cut it in they have plastic clamps or I just got some velcro straps and used it on my hub and flip over houses
