Port Washington Fog Salmon

I decided Wednesday to travel north to Port Washington on Thursday Morning to chase some salmon with a novice crew and avoid the Milwaukee fireworks mess. I arrived at Port early to clear skies and great visibility, but by the time my crew arrived and we made t clear of the harbor, a rather tenacious fog bank appeared from nowhere. With visibility down to 25 feet, we ventured out cautiously SE to 80 FOW and started setting lines. It sure makes me nervous fishing blind like that and we were on high alert for any sound of any other boats. The fishing was a grind to say the least. I started with a spread of glow spoons and a couple of FF. The first rod to fire was a wire dipsy in 140 FOW out 140LOC with a FF combo. That would turn out to be a 12 lb king that ripped off another 100 feet of line before we could gain the upper hand. While that was going on, the down rigger on the same side went off with another king– Doubled up so start the day! Both fish found there way into the box a short time later. Then eerie silence for the next 30 minutes as we trolled NE out to 180 feet. There were tons of marks all the way out but no more takers. We spun around and trolled back to the SW and started switching the spoons to FF. A good decision that payed off quickly at 145 FOW with a triple that turned into a tangled mess of leadcore! We managed another king and a 12lb bow out of that mess. The king on the wire dipsy and the bow on 7 color lead with FF- There was one strand of mylar left on that fly thanks to that one being hooked deep, got the hook back at the cleaning station. The lost one was on the ten color that had fired first on the lone crabface spoon we had left out. Continued the stroll SW as we cleared the tangle and reset as so as we had turned back to the NE and doubled up again at 140. By now the fog was thinning, and we could see the Silver of an acrobatic Steelie at the end of the 7 color. The second was a Laker on the second downrigger down 60. We would circle back through 140 feet with 3 lost screamers to end the morning 6 for 10. Those who stopped to chat at the cleaning station would have dismal reports and only one other stopped to clean their lone fish while we were there.

Sounds like a decent trip Art. I opted for an afternoon / evening trip out of south shore off a decent report from the previous day. I couldn’t find anything but greasers and one lone coho ending 5 for 10. Guess I should have tried Port. The fireworks crowd was huge, and thankfully we got out of the ramp and on the road just before the end.

I learned my lesson with the Fireworks crowd the first year I took up Salmon fishing out of my own boat-it took 3 hours to get the boat out of the water. Talk about boat launch idiots!

I marked huge hooks near bottom where I was at but didn’t want to drop anything down to the depths, as I figured they were greasers. I still managed one though.

Good job in less than idea conditions. That is so unsettling being out there in the fog.
    none-the-less, 6 for 10? You rocked! )

Sounds like you had a good plan. Mind sharing how GPS fast you were going. Seems in the past when I fished Port, I did about 2.7 -2.9 heading NE and 3.2 – 3.5 when heading SW. But seems I always did better when heading out NE than doubling back. I enjoy implementing the FF’s, but like some spoons as well.
What kind of water temps were you seeing? I’ve heard things are still on the cold side.
    Thanks for the report.
BTW Art, are you planning on making the salmon get together the end of this month?

Flatfish,I was traveling 1.9 to 2.1 on my depth raider, which i focus on primarily. Heading NE at 60 deg on my compass I was around 2.4 to 2.6 GPS, going back 240deg I was 2.9 to 3.1 GPS. The water was 51 at the surface and from 20 feet down to 60 feet it was 39. The water is frigid for July! I think the water is so cold that the fish just aren’t aggressively feeding yet. The fish I cleaned had virtually empty stomachs.

I am planning to attend the salmon get together and have still have open seats Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

BK, I sent you the pictures I was finally able to post! I didn’t do anything different today than the day I posted my report! Thank you for trying to help me out!

Glad you got them up! Nice fish!

With your camera resolution set at 480 dpi I’m actually impressed they loaded, but they sure look awesome when a person clicks on them!!
