Lake Pepin, Minn. (KTTC) The St. Paul District Army Corps of Engineers began its annual ice measurements Wednesday on Lake Pepin.
The surveying crew measured 16 holes in roughly a 15-mile span of Lake Pepin and says the average thickness of the ice is 18 inches.
Corps Engineer Kevin Reesie says the shipping season could begin around mid-March as usual but ice fishers should move their fishing huts off the ice now.
“I think they have a deadline of March first here but right now is the time to get’em cause the ice is getting bad.”
Ice measurements are normally completed weekly until the navigation season begins.
