Keep calling!……
This is how it looked this afternoon. Another 50+ degree day tomorrow will put a serious hurt on this ice.

Thanks for the up dates guys. A jon boat and a guy with a chain saw might work real well on the 494 ramp jon. Wish I hadnt sold my chain saw a few years back.

Jon,
How thick would you say the ice is just out from the ramp? The whitish colored ice…..
Foot thick. But there is a crack that runs the entire shoreline. That whole sheet could move out at any time.

Some rising water levels could get it moving real fast to. Looks pretty good sized to be pushed out with some prop wash.
HF’s gate is now open, road is plowed and salted……the launch still needs a lot of help at this point tho!
What a differance a day makes! The MN is open which has opened that side of the miss. down past lilydale. The St Paul side still has some crappy looking ice. The lilydale launch has a ways to go yet.

I am game on cleaning a ramp out this weekend if anyone is interested and mother nature allows it! I need a P2 fix bad…..
I could help out on Saturday starting around 11:15ish or so. The forecast is calling for wind gusts of up to 40 mph on Friday. That should help deteriorate the ice shelf, especially it the waves are hitting that shore.

Thats good news. Thanks for the update Pier!
Did they happen to plow down the ramp at all? Looks like this nice weather is going to cool down a bit come this weekend, so hoping mother nature can help us out today and tomorrow!
I know this spring bite is going to be short (pending level of spring thaws) but hopefully sweet!
No plowing of the ramp other than a little teaser at the top of the landing!

Doesnt look good for Hidden Falls. Lilydale looks to be a much better shot than that but plan on draggin a boat across the ice.
2 boats launched out of 494 today.

Have at it guys, have fun but be safe!
I can confirm that as of 11:30 2-18-11 the 494 ramp is open.!!! the thick ice shelf went away very quickly. I had checked it wednesday afternoon and it looked bad and on friday
Went out of 494 today. Caught some really nice white bass a few snakes and 7 nice walleye all 16+ with a nice 21. and a bonus large mouth. Thought I had a second on when one of the eyes jumped 2 ft out of the water. There was alot of ice floating in the morning but when I left at 5 there was hardly any.
Thanks for the report. Tough day of sitting around the house not doing much. The truck is still in the shop. Boats still in the snow bank.
Almost drove off the wakota bridge when I saw a boat just north, way cool! I didn’t think that shelf would go away for quite some time at the 494 landing. Maybe time to warm the boat up in the garage and change some fluids, I knew I should have done it last fall.
I think someone chopped the ice out in front of the ramp. It is cut straight out and there is ice chunks on the ice. Hard to believe that a 30 ft piece of ice just broke free and floated away. Thanks to the chipper!
Not to be Captain obvious but today’s Snow-storm has set Hidden Falls Launch opening back a ways….
Glad to hear that some boats made it out! I can’t wait myself, even if this snow has be a little depressed. With warmish temps coming I bet we’ll be out there before too long. I’m just hoping we get a few good opportunities to hit the river before the floods come!!
No kidding.
I’m kind of kicking myself for not chopping some of the ice off of HF’s ramp during the warm snap. This snow can be cleared pretty easy with a blower but the ice under it is the problem and a lot more work.
Oh well, with higher sun angle it should melt off pretty quickly….
I was going to work on Hidden Falls ramp the other day. Looked at all that ice between there and the confluence and didnt bother. No since getting the boat in and not being able to head down river.
Lillydale looked to be a much better bet. 30′ of ice and you are on open water.
Tried to fish tonight but the snow filled in the nice clear ramp at 494. I checked the levee park. It is launchable if you want to shovel off the ramp. Lilydale is not plowed past the parking lot and hidden falls ice hasn’t but alot more snow on the ramp. I think i m gonna shovel 494 tomorrow night and maybe try my hand at ice chipping fri or sat.
If you can find the guy over at the compost site he may help with keeping that ramp open. He is the one that knocked a hole in the ice there a few weeks back with the front end loader.
Sundays weather is not looking to bad for getting out.
Jason,
You mentioned Levee park is launchable if we can shovel it out? Any sizeable ice lip at the waters edge? Is the road plowed down to the ramp area?
Thanks for the update
I’m curious about that too…I’m assuming you mean Lion’s Levee? I’ve seen people get stuck trailering their boats there in the middle of summer.
