Anybody spend any time fishing Grey Cloud Slough? I checked it out late last summer and thought it might be good early in the spring.

I used to live in SPP and used to fish it but haven’t in recent years.

Gotta remember that it is catch and release only. As it is out on the main river. Used to catch panfish here and there. One of my favorite spots for winter fishing was right at the split. But there is no parking on the roadways down there so you have to get permission to park in someones driveway. Used to catch a lot of bass in the summer down there. Lots of structure for fishing them.Another good spot that a lot of shore fishermen fish is at the culvvert. Where the road crosses over the backwaters, and over by the ridge. Be aware that there used to be a large no wake zone down there. But I don’t think there is any way for them to enforce it. Good luck

You’re right, it is catch and release in there being connected to the river. I saw a lot of promise back there for spring time with all the weeds that are there. When i was in there last summer, I could not believe the amount of fish (although mostly rough) that were back there. There were plenty i could not recognize.

    Shumpy,

I have spent some time back in Grey cLoud in higher water conditions. THe bite can be good when the right conditions are there. Generally, I have had my best luck near the culvert areas or neckdowns or areas where the current was forced to push. When the water levels are on the rise, these areas seem to produce some pretty respectable walleyes as well as some bass and pike.Pitching light jigs and BIG plastics to the current breaks produced best in those dingy water conditions.

Good luck and let us all know how things go for you if you get a chance to fish it. Once water levels raise in late MArch and early April, I will be making several trips in there.

    Steve,
I checked it out late last summer all the way back to where it dead-ends and was really intrigued by all the weed growth, the most weed growth on pool 2 as far as i am aware. I’m still in search of that pool 2 musky and thought the weeds and food in there might hold them, although by musky opener the water temp might be to high. I hope to get out there as soon as the ice is out to snoop around a bit.

    shumpy,

I agree with you and all the weeds back there. IF you follow the culvert area through Grey Cloud, you will see a small deeper channel where the channel used to be more pronounced, here you will find current areas adjacent to the weed clumps. Any neck down areas with current should be areas worth checking is my guess!! But then again, what do I know I am just a lonely marble-eye chaser!!

    Good luck
