On pool 4 just before the ‘Y’ on the Wisconsin side there is a huge pile off rock that was dumped into the river caged up by pilings and timber. I would guess it extends out into the water 40′ and is 50-60′ wide. Any idea what that is all about?

Pool 4 Pilings and Rock

I hope no one asks why all the trees are gone on the WI side next spring…or why we are spending $650,000 on a fish ladder feasibility study to allow fish including asian carp to swim around Lock and Dam #3.
Or why we are spending $97 MILLION to raise the banks, but can spend $14 MILLION to put a fish passage way in.
Raise the banks only to cut out an area for a fish passage way??
Sorry, I’m thinking you might have been looking for a shorter answer Catch and Release.
November 20, 2010 at 9:45 pm #911090I read that site when you first posted it and knew there was construction going on in P3 but I didn’t see anything about P4 being modified. I’m probably misinterpreting the language on their site I still didn’t find what they are doing below the dam. Is that the beginning of the lower embankment work you mentioned? Also I read this:
Quote:
It may while construction, but they have to stay away from the claim beds by a number of feet.
Aren’t those pilings and that rock right on the clam bed?
Thanks for all the info you’ve posted BK
November 20, 2010 at 10:03 pm #911093If you click on the link to the Construction Project, there are three parts
Upper Embankment P3
Lock Wall Extension P4
Lower Embankment P4
Everyone agrees that the first two are needed and money should be spent on this.
The Lower Embankment and the Fish Passage Way (that’s not talked about in the link provided) are what’s going to make people go “What Happened!”
P4 from the dam down to just past the Y will be void of trees on the WI side.
I’ve never seen any clams that far down, but then I wasn’t paid to look for them either. The clam beds start (from what I know) about halfway up from the bottom of the Y to the culvert. Roughly.

This website’s goal is to inform all interested parties, public, and government stakeholders, about the Project, including its’ scope and the schedules.
They aren’t meeting their goal.
I don’t see how clear cutting the area or reinforcing the bank is going to help anything. In my opinion it seems like a waste of money (and a ton of it) to destroy habitat.

…and that’s your answer to the rocks ect in the corner by the Y.
There’s nothing that can be done about this project…but there’s still time to email/call the Corp and your DNR about the fish passageway.
It’s killing me. Five states are in legal battles about invasive species, the Corp is worried about the water going around the dam….and WE are spending $650,000. to find out if it’s feasible to spend another $14,000,000.00 to put a fish passage way in.
A fish passageway that will bypass the dam that we just spent $97. Million on to ensure water doesn’t go around.
Will someone pinch me!

………”remember back when there use to be trees, habitat, eagles, clam beds, current breaks, awesome fishing here……….now it’s a featureless rock wall……Why and How did that happen??”………….Now people will have to move downstream and find new hotspots like “Horse Hollow”!
