    I read its illlegal to use cast nets to catch minnows for bait in MN. Has anybody used another method to trap or net shad on the river? They are starting to get nice and fat and I’d like to get me some of those to use as bait.

    Cast nets are not legal in MN.

    Dipnet is my choice but it is not reliable.

    <sigh>

    From the MN DNR Offices:

    Quote:

    Thank you for your request for clarification. It doesn’t matter what species of fish or how they are taken – it is illegal to take any fish from a designated infested water and use them for bait purposes.

    MS 84D.03, Subd. 3. Bait harvest from infested waters. (a) The taking of wild animals from infested waters for bait or aquatic farm purposes is prohibited, except as provided in paragraph (b).

    This is one of the priorities of the MN Catfish and Sturgeon Alliance.

    Taking of bait from let’s just say the MN River and making it illegal to use on the same water would be like saying you shouldn’t practice catch and release(?)

    unless i misunderstand its completely [censored]. we go up to rainy river, and we are not allowed to catch our own shiners in the river and use them in the same river we caught them out of. completely stupid.

    2 years ago we pulled up to clementson, dnr was there checking someone just leaving….he came up to us and asked us if we have any minnow catching devices…we did (we are from illinois where its fine) and he confiscated them!!! we hadnt even put the boat in the water.

    its all about money
