I wish people would cut the knot on the hook and let the fish go,insted of working for 10 min. trying to get the hook out. I have told people to cut the knot and let them go,they look at me like I am nuts, and say I will lose my hook.If they can not afford a hook or 2 they should not be fishing. They should be on foodstamps. Jerry

u shouldn’t cut the knot u should cut the hook. i’m a musky nut and have seen first hand a fish the died due to somebody else who cut their line and not the hook. the fish had a huge hook in it’s throat and couldn’t eat anything so buy a good set of hook cutters and cut the hook and then remember to get the hook pieces out with a plires.

I believe a majority of fish with a hook left in their throat will die, so I work hard to get them out. I do this with the fish in the net, in the water, and if it’s taking a while I’ll give the fish a break to recoup.

I know there was a muskie study that proved that hooks left behind don’t dissolve and usually kill the fish, but that was with large hooks. Is there a study out there on smaller bass/walleye hooks?

i think they are supposed to dissolve but how long will that take? i think it’s just easiest to cut the hook with some knipex cutters.

I cut the hooks and if I can get both pieces of hook out great, if not I get what I can and let it go. I think pulling and tugging trying to get the hook out dose too much harm to the fish.

I’d like to see more than one study, Like a lot of studies that show leaving the hook in is OKAY! I always cut the line because we’ve all been told so many times that they will survive,, but really. DO THEY???

Not trying to be smart. but if a fish is foul hooked…..there can’t be a a hook in it’s mouth. I don’t think we are all on the same page. Or at the very least talking about the same scenario.

I guess foul hooked fish really means gut hooked to him.
A good pair of nippers will cut most any hook.
I know this first hand my buddy was foul hooked in the cheek. I pushed the hook thru the side of his face and cut the hook, backed it out. Released him back to the back deck. With in a few minute he was still alive and catching fish.
This was after a couple of pictures and a few laughs at his expense

For me I make the call after assessing the situation. I’ll choose whatever way I think the fish has the best chance. I have to say I need to get to the hardware store and find a good tool for snipping the hook in close quarters. If the best you could do is snap the hook, at least it has a chance of getting out on its own.

Then again, depending on the species and the legalities, I’ll just keep a fish I know probably won’t make it. That’s about the only time I keep fish.

    Hello,

I use bullheads a lot for bait and catch my own. If I’m in a hurry to get out fishing I will cut my line cause a lot of the times they swallow the hook and I would say that 75percent of the time they some how puke the hook out by the time I’m fishing. I’m not saying that all fish do this, but it goes to show that it is posible for a fish to get a hook out.

I once caught a sheephead on pool 8 with six inches of line coming out his poop hole. On the end of that line was a eagle claw baitholder hook. Only about half an inch of line left in the poop hole so I pulled it out. That was one lucky sheephead to digest a hook and six inches of line and get to show it to me. Just thought I would share a funny experiance. I did keep the hook.
