Anyone else notice the DNR buoys in pool 2 just south of the 494 landing? Any idea what they are there for. They are about 1/2 mile south of the landing around the barge channel and channel that head into the marina.

Netting fish? Seen them mark nets on lakes with little bouys for walleye.
May 21, 2010 at 4:04 pm #873742Another heads up about buoys: There are some green marker buoys just down from the seaplane base along the island area that are way out of place. Might have been dragged by a barge?

I’m not sure how the barges even squeeze by that one…it seems like its right in the middle!

May 21, 2010 at 5:19 pm #873777There is a red cone bouncing rite at the surface about a half mile north of the 494 bridge. It was near the other red cone last night but might be on the move. This was far enough out in the channel to be a hazard to.
May 22, 2010 at 6:07 pm #873955I saw the Coast Guard buoy tender Wyaconda working on the navigation signs above the confluence yesterday so they’re in the area.
jstirasPosts: 88May 24, 2010 at 6:02 pm #874477We’re running some gear to capture and tag catfish. Our buoys are all orange and have DNR stickers on them. The gear is in the immediate vicinity of the buoy so you wouldn’t want to fish right at the buoy because you’ll likely snag the net. They’re not 250 foot long gill nets or anything. Running hoop nets and trot lines tethered to shore or some other structure.

May 24, 2010 at 7:26 pm #874517Glad you mentioned that Joel. There is one rite above a popular wingdam just south of the 494 landing. Glad I didnt hook it with my anchor. Did catch a nice 5# flat rite there.
How long are they going to be out? The cats are on a pretty good bite rite now. We seem to be catching them on just about every trip while fishing walleyes. They seem to be fond of blade baits.

I’m bouncing around the river randomly so short sections will have the gear for about a week at a time and we will check periodically throughout the week and mix in electrofishing when we can.
I’ve been using two different sized buoys, one is about 4 inches in diameter and you don’t want to go between shore and those smaller 4 inch buoys. The larger 8 inch diameter buoys are anchored in the current and might have 30+ feet of rope attached, or two buoys linked in series. Just have to watch your anchor and props around those ones. I think someone either snagged one of the hoop nets or a snapper got mad at the net because I had one net with a hole that needs a little repair.
We’re tagging both channel and flathead catfish, so if you catch a tagged one, be sure to record the species, tag number and location where you caught it (and length if you can). If you have a GPS, coordinates are great. If not, you can report to the nearest tenth of a river mile or find the location on a map on the tagged fish reporting feature on our website (or you can report it directly to me). If you would normally harvest the fish, harvest it and let me know. If you release it, just record the info and let it go.
FYI, we tagged about 50 catfish last week.

Joel, if you happen to find my pride in one of those hoop nets, please return it. After some initial success around there, I have written it off as not worth the shoreline walk or bumping into the resident homeless guy in short shorts.jstirasPosts: 88May 26, 2010 at 1:44 pm #875129I’ll be sure to let you know if I find your pride today. You might find my pride south of 494 where we had a buoy come off a hoop net in strong current last week and lost the net.
