I was out last weekend, but the fishing was dead. I avoided rivers and backwaters, since the ice was not safe. Hickory hills park, Palo, and a farm pond failed to produce a single fish. I could see them down there on the flasher, but I suppose the weather had them lock-jawed.
I also fished the deep bend on the Wapsi (open water) below Troy, but no fish there either. I could see the bottom in almost 6′ of water, which I thought was original for an Iowa river.
The novelty of sittting on the ice in 65° weather was still worth the trip. The ice was a little iffy in spots, though, and I’m wondering now if the snow will goof it up worse.
