Pool 2 Weekend

It was a nice couple days to get out and knock the rust off. I was out yesterday, launching out of Lions Levee. Spent a few hours scouting around some side channels looking for the perfect seam…but never did find it. Fast, high, dirty water made the river look pretty unfamiliar to me. Lots of cans missing or moved and a fair amount of wood still coming down. Still fun to get out and run down the equipment and check out the new sonar.

Anybody stick any fish this weekend?

Well I did but not on Pool 2. To be honest, I figured I wouldn’t have much luck on the river until the water came down and and cleared up some. And I’m still spooked by all the wood and sunken cans and junk.

So my friend Gary and I went down to Crystal (in Burnsville) and threw flies all afternoon. Between the two of us we probably caught 100 sunfish, a few Crappies and some incidental Bass. The good news was that the boat ran great, the new 4 weight fly rod is a joy to use, it was sunny, and we caught a lot of fish. The bad news was that they were all about 4 inches long.

Pretty slow for my boat too. Burned a lot of gas spot jumping… Water temp up to 55 in some areas yesterday afternoon. Although high and fast, I didn’t think the water was too muddy. Good to be back on the P2!

Found a couple shorties upstream from the MN confluence on Sat. dragging plastic and accidentally found some smallies on Sun. Was pretty slow overall for me but being new to pool 2 I spent most of the time checking out the river with the new finder and structurescan. One thing I did learn is they didn’t like pink plastic Last time I let my daughter pick out plastics at the store
