This may seem like a dumb question to some. I cannot figure out which northern dam that defines Pool 2. Is there such a thing as Pool 1 or is it just the Mississippi River north of Pool 2? Growing up in Grand Rapids and living on the Mississippi, I never heard it referred to as Pool 1.

The Ford Dam in St. Paul sets the Northern limit of Pool 2.

Not sure if this is accurate or not but I did a google search for pool 1. It says it goes from L and Dam 1 near St. Paul north to St. Anthony Falls.

That is how I understand it. Above St. Anthony falls is not a pool to my knowledge because most of it is not navigable by barges or maybe because there is no lock at the Coon Rapids dam?

Pool 2 is located between the Hastings Damn to the south, and the Ford Damn to the north. It is also defined as down stream on the Minnesota River from the Mendota Bridge.

Pool 2 is from below LD#1 (aka-ford dam) and above LD#2

There is a stretch above St. Anthony Falls that is navigible by barges, just not all the way to the CRD, which would be a nightmare. There is barge traffic about just up to the Camden bridge, then it gets a bit hairy.

It’s dredged for barge traffic up to there. There is a sign stating where the dredged portion ends.

Yep, that’s right. You can go pretty good up until there, but I have seen some incidents a bit further north. Many years back I saw a bass boat ‘rooster tailing’ pretty good north of 694 until we heard the sickening crunch of lower unit on rock.
