The river is opening up

I made the trek from Winona to Red Wing yesterday to do some fishing at Pool 4 and saw a lot of ice out there on the main channel. Today, I went from Winona to Wabasha for a basketball game and the river had really opened up down this way.

Yesterday there was ice at Bass Camp from the harbor as far as I could see down river. Today, there was open water as far as I could see. Also, the ice above BC on the main channel was all turning dark and you could see wet areas all over.

Spring is coming

Can a guy get a boat in at BC yet?

Not in the traditional terms, or at least not without pushing a long way across the ice. The harbor and ramp will most likely be locked up for a few weeks yet.

I’ll have to check out the ramp behind Kwik Trip in Fountain City, that is usually the first place we can put in. I know I was able to use this ramp to fish the BC area last year in February.

The ramp just below Winona dam usually opens early too, I was in there Feb. 25 last year.
