What weight for three-ways

I want to troll more on Pepin next year. I usually lead line but I want to try three-way rigs. How big is the weight and what is a decent lure, ie. minnow, shap-rap, walleye diver to pull with these rigs. Also what size bait pulls well with these rigs. Thanks

quicksilver, The size weight you use depends on the current and the speed you want to troll. You might have to experiment a little to get it dialed in. Most of the time when I pull cranks behind three-ways I use shallow divers, little husky jerks, small thundersticks, #5 shad rap and stamina cranks are some of my favorites.

Hawg, I try to troll 1.5 to 2.5 mph in Pepin with no current. Any ideas about weight now?

    thanks

May make a suggestion, try going faster than that in the spring. I was really cruising last year and man do those fish really smack lures at that high rate of speed. Plus you cover a lot more ground, I mean water….

quicksilver, For the slower end start out with 1-11/2 ounces, if you pick up your speed your going to have to increase your wieght. Its not uncommon to have 5 ounces on when your going a little faster or a little deeper. I do not three-way out on pepin, so my advice might be a little off, but it will get you in the ballpark……

Quicsilver,if you want to 3 way the lake bring a variaty of weights with you. I usualy use 3 ways and sticks in current situations, and use alot of 3 to5 oz wieghts….and as big as 8 oz.

I try to keep my lines as straight up and down as I can in this situation…..for instance if I am in 20 feet I will only have 30 feet out on the line counter on one rod and 35 out on the other…… so bring lots of weights to try….,and don’t be shy about big weights this way you can fish deeper and faster if you need to.

    hope this helps.

Trial and error for weights is something that has to be done on an individual basis. Brett King on the board here has a system that is awesome for this purpose, and cuts the trial and error time by 2/3. His changable weight system allows you to change weight based on current and lure weight as fast as reeling up, and plugging in a new weight. Pretty slick, it should work as well or better on wingies.

i saw tha new system used at the walleye searchers meeting and i am inpressed. Even though I am fairly new to river fishing i have to say my most successful means of catching fish was 3 ways by far. Anyway I own every weight from 1/2 to 4 ouncesand i had times where 4 ounces barly did the job. I would also recomend from what I havelearned so far that on the lake to long line or leadcore it i never had much sucess on the lake with 3 ways all i caughtwere a few saugers.GOOD LUCK

    Hey Erick

I just used Bretts new weight system this weekend and let me tell you there is no better way to fish three ways this is one of they fastest way to change your weights plus if you are fishing heavy timber or rocks don’t push the weight all the way on and if you get snagged up pretty good that weight will pop right off instead of retieing your line just reel up and pop a new sinker on as easy as that.

thanks Brett this is deffinatley the only way to fish three ways.

Here is Brett Kings “H20 On the Go” – Trolling Sinkers box. I think it is a great idea and a real time saver. And he makes a weight system for Drop-Shotting also that I am just wild about. What a deal to get to have a quick change drop-shot rig… sweet! Look for these products to be in our up-coming EFN store.

Here too is the EFN Hat that I am offering at the Walleye Expo… except the one you see here says EFN Pro-Staff, and the one at the Expo will say EFN and http://www.fishtheriver.com or http://www.fishthelake.com on the front.

    Hey Brett,

What kind of price have you put on the H2O snap weight system?

    Here’s what I use:

Weights I use are 1-5 oz. Weights over 3 oz. can be tough to find–when you do see some get them. Different shapes/weights can have advantages meaning sometimes a weight shape with less water resistance can allow you to use smaller weights. I use them with 3-ways and also snap weights and planer boards/flat-line trolling. Glass and Graphite rods. Got to get ’em bumpin bottom and you will lose some. I’ll troll speeds from barely noticing that you move upstream to 5 mph-GPS speed.

Cranks-floaters-stickbaits, shad raps, wally divers, fat raps(bass cranks)–colder water-use floaters/stickbaits 2 1/2″ to 3-3 1/2″ and as water temp increases move up the vibration/action scale of the cranks into shad raps 5’s and 7’s then up to fat raps/some bass cranks/or hot & tots (very erratic-lot’s of action) for the peak of the water temp. Fish can do weird stuff though and hit very erratic baits in cold water or stick baits in warm water or hit fast moving baits as a reaction-not giving them the chance to think about it. Check back on the board and it will be posted on what cranks are the preference pattern and check the articles on FTR. I usually do best with firetiger, perch, crawdad patterns.

Line-I troll with power pro and 10 lb. mono. Some times mono leaders w/main line power pro. Check out the book Precision Trolling it’s like a bible to trollers.

Lot’s of options on 3-ways. I’m new to 3-ways and constantly think of new ways and modifications for them. Good luck, Brian
