I’m looking for opinions on trolling motor batteries and on board chargers. Any good brands and places to buy them would be appreciated. Here are the details of what they are going in.

I run a Warrior 177 with a 12 volt transom motor that came with the boat when I bought it. I also have a 65 lb bow mount 24 volt that I added. I bought 2 series 27 deep cycle batteries 18 months ago that died. They may have been overcharged by my buddies 10 amp charger as the auto shutoff finally turned off after 20 hours or so. They were stored inside in the winter and charged every 60 days. I have looked into the Trolling Thunder batteries but fin the price tag a bit high. I have no on board charger in the boat and am thinking of purchasing one as well. Eventually I will also replace the transon motor with a 24 volt as carrying 4 batteries does weigh the boat down.

    Thanks

I have a Guest 2620 on board charger to charge my 24 volt bow mount trolling motor, and it works very well. It will charge 2 batteries and supply 10 amps to each battery. It will also maintain the batteries for storage. I’m very happy with this charger. SNAKEYES

I will second the guest 2620. Plus you can put the charger on your battery in the winter and plug it in once a month to top off the battery.

I’m very happy with the group 27 Wall Mart batteries. The Ever Start Deef Cycle Trolling. Part number 27DC-6. 115 amp hr, 160 reserve.

The on-board chargers are great. However, I use a 10 amp automatic charger with a charger plug and charge back to the batteries through the trolling motor plug.

If you’re in the Twin Cities, you might want to check out McDonald Batteries. They’re located at 2948 Rice St. in Little Canada between Highway 36 and 694. I was there on Friday and picked up a marine cranking battery on clearance for $20. They normally have a marine deep cycle, 135 amp hr, 230 reserve for $53 but were out of stock on those but the guy said he should be getting some more in a few weeks. Their 115 amp hr batteries cost about $46 I think.

The place is kind of hard to find. It’s on the east side of Rice St. tucked in behind some other buildings. It’s like a warehouse but they do sell retail to the public.

Give them a call to make sure they have what you’re looking for in stock before driving there. Their number is 651-484-7944.
