Last Thursday was my first time on Pool 2 and I’m positive it won’t be my last. Our original plan was to hit Mille Lacs, but with high winds and thunderstorms we opted to stay a little closer to home. My buddy Lee (lester on IDO) and I hit the water at about noon. The plan was to hopefully catch some fish trolling and taking it easy. We hit a couple spots and on our third spot we stumbled upon a 18″ sauger. We made a couple passes through this area and picked up 1 or 2 fish every couple passes. We were on our way down river to try some other spots when we got a call that another buddy wanted us to pick him up at the landing. We spun around and decided to troll back, when we stumbled upon some dumb luck. Actually it was a double! For the next 4 hours we trolled a 200 yard stretch over and over picking up a couple fish every pass. Most of the fish were in the 15-20″ range, but we had a couple at 25 inches too. We had our best success trolling shad raps tight to the bottom in the 8-10′ range. Awesome day on the water, good friends, a great view of downtown St. Paul, and walleyes close to home.
