Question on Marker Bouy

Last night on Pool 2 I ran down river past the site of the old swing bridge. There was a can above and another one below the pier closest to the SPP side of the river. The cans were red with a wide green stripe around them. I looked in the DNR’s boating guide and didn’t find a marker that looked like that. Any idea what it means?

    Thanks!

    http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_the_function_of_a_buoy_that_has_alternating_red_and_green_horizontal_bands

Function of a bouy red and green bands

Red and Green Colors and/or Lights: These are placed at the junction of two channels to indicate the preferred (primary) channel when a channel splits. If green is on top, the preferred channel is to the right. If red is on top, the preferred channel is to the left. These also are sometimes referred to as “junction buoys.”

    Preferred channel markers?

Haven’t seen them in your setting, but that’s my best guess.

It makes sense in this case, as it’s somewhat narrow between the pier and shore. There’s plenty of water on both sides so this marker is telling you to keep left as you pass. Sort of like traffic lanes I guess. You learn something every day!

    Thanks again

The swing bridge fell in the river over the winter. Last I heard it is still laying on the bottom of the river. If you draft more than about 8-10 feet, you will hit it.

edit: This would be cool to look at with a H-bird! Got get me one of those things!

Jon, that is interesting. I didn’t know the metal from the bridge was still in the water. Any idea if they plan to take it out? It is suprising that no trees got caught up in the metal. Maybe there are some, but they just aren’t sticking out of the water.

The first time I seen them I thought is was funny too! They finally moved all the cans back into place last Thursday. That was the first time I have seem them myself also. Must be because of the bridge like your saying John. Last I seen it the supports of the old bridge were swung pointing North and south so they must be keeping people from running up onto them. I did not know it fell down either. It sounded like they were working on it this winter some and must have tried to get it down anyways. I have a couple buddies that work at the Marathon there and watch it just about from my house myself and one day it was gone!.
