Lake Pepin in August- What can you tell me?

    Hi everyone-

I have never fished Lake Pepin, but we are planning a trip there in mid August of this year. We’re going to come up on a Thursday afternoon and leave on Sunday. There will 5 guys in 2 boats. I was hoping that some folks with experience could help me out with some information.

    1) We are primarily looking for bass, walleyes, and northerns. Is the entire area good for these?

    2) We would really like to find a place to stay. I found one place on the WI side that that I believe belongs to one of this boards’ members- Everts Resort. Does anyone know anything about this place? Are there any other places that you would recommend looking into?

    3) Which out-of-state fishing license would you need?

    4) Are there any good areas to do flathead fishing at night?

    5) Any suggestions on hot spots to fish, not-to-miss area attractions or places to eat?

In general, we’re just 5 guys looking to get out of the house for a fishing weekend, and we want to maximize the time that we spend up there.

Any input is certainly appreciated (and I hope I have the right forum!) Enjoy the boards!

    1) Yes. All 3 are common. Bass – Smallies and White. Add in sauger too.

    2) Everts is nice. You are right on the water with docks, bait/tackle and fish cleaning facilities. There are a few resturants that deliver there too.

3)If you are staying on the WI side, get a WI license. The WI license allows for a higher possession limit on walleye.

    4) BK?

    5) Trolling cranks!

I’ll probably move this over to the Mississippi River forum later today. You may get some more input there.

By August the walleye / sauger bite will have slowed some but you’ll still be able to troll up a nice mess out on Pepin.

Big pike will be hanging around the Rush River.

    White bass will be everywhere.

Smallmouth can be found anywhere deep water runs in tight to shore out on Lake Pepin. Tubes, topwaters, cranks… even small jigs and leeches will put fish in the boat.

If you are a die-hard lake troller you will be more efficient time wise to stay in Lake City or possibly Camp Lacouplis.

Flatheads, we will have a bite going on this end.If you are looking to experience river and Lake combination, then you might consider staying here.Dragging jigs has proven itself for many years that time of year and trolling is always an option as well.

But the Friday night fish buffet that has the all you can handle drawn butter doesn’t deliver.

Shooter of the Bluff’s Bar and Grill has a ton of fishing info too! Come to think of it, I believe I saw some free drink card for the Bluff’s at Everts…this could be another reason to stay 11 miles north of Pepin.

I’ll shoot you a pm about the cat spots and bite.

ps If anyone tells Shooter I said the above, I’ll deny it.

Go to Everts hands down, Dean will do his best to help with the fish . Hell , you don’t even need your boat in August at Everts, plenty of good fishing off the docks . We have done the August trip for the last seven years , I will tell you up front get a guide for your first trip ,you will not regret it ..

I will also be up for the first time on Lake Pepin. Leaving Wednesday. Will be fishing for walleyes mainly but would also like to try some crappies. Any suggestions on the crappies?

    Thanks

Try running you trolled baits thru some deeper water off prominant points or along the rip-rap in deeper water on the Minnesota side of the river, especially the lower portions of the lake to Lacupolis. Crappies will bang those cranks being trolled for walleyes.
