Nope I think the water is getting lower, at high speed on plane no problemo, idling well , I know at 60 I can make it accross 12″ of water
emtreePosts: 2May 27, 2009 at 10:36 pm #779765I’m interested in learning how to run the wisconsin channel. Anyone have any suggestions.
May 27, 2009 at 10:48 pm #779766…Very fast or not at all.
We even struggle with a jet in late summer.
May 27, 2009 at 10:50 pm #779768Mostly stay on the outside bends in the WI channel or better yet follow someone who knows but don’t follow Kirt in that Tuffy as you have already read…
May 27, 2009 at 10:55 pm #779774You can make but when you come around the corner by the docks and there is a boat doing 10mph right in front of you and have to slow down well, glad my wife and boys had shorts on
I did not pull redneck though definitly dont follow him, well maybe follow him he will dredge it out with his engine
emtreePosts: 2May 27, 2009 at 10:57 pm #779775I have a 185vs ranger with a 150 yamaha 4 stroke. I don’t have a jack plate yet, but am looking at getting one. Is the closing dam on the north end an issue or is it deep enough. Are there any guides out there that are willing to show a guy how to run it?
May 27, 2009 at 11:26 pm #779785Rich, I’ve was around last time you plugged that merc up. The boy was pretty made.
May 27, 2009 at 11:46 pm #779790Mark,
He is homesick enough right now I don’t think I could get him mad if he was on the river Only 7 weeks and he be back and then the fish better be worried—till then they are fairly safe The boy is doing great though and every letter talks about fishing and being back in the boat so I guess I can endure until July 16th!May 28, 2009 at 12:03 am #779794As of monday, it was getting close to the point were you get a little nervous. You still have to hit the marks just right and be sure to be on plane and trimmed up all the way. I would think it should be good for another week or two but we will see.
Kurt, dont you hate it when you come around the corner of the docks and you see 3 boats just putting along trying to get through there You know your sol than.I should mention I did drag slightly on monday, I wasnt fully trimmed due to some boat that were in my route and I also had 5 people in the boat. It will be getting hairy here shortly though
May 28, 2009 at 1:25 am #779823You should have seen the look the 2 guys gave me as I went WOT over it and they where pushing themselves off of the sandbar and of course they where right on my gps trail from the previous time that morning
May 28, 2009 at 12:55 pm #779896one of my favorite things to do is sit on my beach and watch people try to run it. Some know where they are going, some dont. I think this summer I am going to make numbered signs and judge the attempts.
May 28, 2009 at 2:47 pm #779953I’ve been through there with James a couple times and he goes slow or drags the boat which seems like the correct, safe and mature way to traverse that section.

That summer it was the only way to get through. We had to trim the big motor up out of the water and push it through the shallowest portion of the sand shoal. Most year’s there’s a passable “line” through the sand but it does move a little each year making those first few low water runs a little dicey. I’ve never stuck it in there but I’ve seen the results of what happens if you take the wrong line at full throttle. I can think of one alumacraft that stuck it so bad you could see the intakes for the livewells above the water line once it came to rest on the sand. I can only imagine some of the crazy attempts you’d witness if you lived back there.
Thankfully I’ve never heard of anyone that’s been hurt running that section.
May 28, 2009 at 3:49 pm #779983Probably the “the correct, safe and mature way to traverse that section” would be to stay on the main channel and between the red and green navigation markers and spend the 45 minutes or so to get to the lake. I’ve been called old alot—more so lately—but not mature so I guess I’ll keep running it at speed and plowing a trough for the people behind me
May 28, 2009 at 3:54 pm #779985Yep, I am with Redneck on this one, main channel between the cans–keeps the skeg paint looking good.
May 28, 2009 at 7:05 pm #780057That sandbar was perfect for my 115 after I bounced the skeg off the rocks on Tonka. She was sharp enough to cut you. Only took one pass to make it smoother than a baby’s bottom. Unfortunately on my second pass someone shut down right in the middle when they saw there graph rise fast. That took the Holst mechanic to get it peeing again…the motor that is.
May 28, 2009 at 10:59 pm #780120I’ve got to ask since I’m a relative newbie down at pool 4. What is the big deal about traversing the Wisconsin channel vs. going thru the no wakes zones between Evert’s and the head of the lakes? Is it the amount of time to get to lake Pepin or is it that I’m missing a fishing opportunity in the Wisconsin channel. Looking for some education and thanks.
May 29, 2009 at 1:18 am #780144Time is a big factor, there are some great spots back there and it gives us something to talk about when the fish aren’t biting
May 29, 2009 at 2:09 am #780161The reason I asked is we hired a guide and he took us down the Wisconsin channel a couple of years back in the fall and he told us not to watch the locators. I think he set us up. Of course like a couple of kids we watched it go from 20 feet deep to totally black several times. As if that wasn’t enough we were full tilt heading for a dock and just feet from the end we take a 90 degree turn to the right to. One of the more exciting rides I have been on and one of the better reasons to either hire a guide or go with someone that knows the river. We had an awful lot of fun that day.
May 29, 2009 at 10:55 am #780222There is another little short cut, but it is not for the faint of heart, kind of like a Valley Fair ride

May 29, 2009 at 3:24 pm #780321seems to move so much that safely marking it would almost be a liability I would almost assume?
