Seasonal Flow Rates Affecting Fishing

After reading many posts this Spring, some people said the flow rates were wild and high–others said the flow rate didn’t affect how they fished–and the opinions kept “flowing.” hehehe

Anyway, what I scratch myself about is: given the flow rate, which I check on various sites, are there some rules that can be applied to flow rate about walleyes and saugers?

Many of you have educated me–with great patience I might add–about current seams. So, given what I know, I’m pretty confident that regardless of flow, current seams are the ticket anyway.

So, what’s up with flow seasonally?

The river will always tell you where to fish.

Lakes, due to being stable environments, have “spots” that just always seem to produce. But remember, a “spot” is only good if there is food for the fish on it (other than the spawn, even then, food plays a part).

Rivers have “spots” too, but it is ever changing due to an ever changing environment-flow goes faster, flow goes slower, stage goes up, stage goes down.–rarely the same from one year to the next-heck rarely the same from one week to the next.

A simple rule is, high water think shallow and out of the flow (baitfish do not like fast water). low water think scattered (much more comfortable and larger environments for the baitfish thruout the system.)

Some of the fishing reports (example: Dustin Stewarts) note the rate of flow and stage of the river-go thru the history of reports and note the flow and stage for the given time of year and start forming patterns–this is repeatable from year to year. Get in the habit of checking the websites for the history and prediction of river stage, water temp and flow rates–doing so prior to going fishing allows you to have a leg up and plan ahead to where you may fish.

Figure out this river puzzle and your lake fishing will improve.

    Good luck,

    Jeremy
