Hi all.
This year Kathy and I decided to do something new and try early walleye fishing on the Mississippi. I dabble with walleye fishing but am by no means what I’d consider accomplished. We set Friday 3/20 as the day. Co-incidentally, James Holst did his walleye fishing seminar at Markquart’s Skeeter Boat Center on Thursday evening which was very timely. What an incredibly informative seminar it was. I really liked how he encouraged lots of questions as I learned a great deal from those too. Kathy REALLY liked it because she won the Beckman net.
Guys like Dean and Jason Halfen were also great at answering several other questions about what to expect, where to get started, etc. They made us feel very comfortable venturing out to someplace we had never been before. Thanks to all those guys, as well as everyone who posts helpful info here to help the less educated, yet dedicated, anglers understand more about the fish, their behaviour, and different ways to catch them.
Anyway, Friday was a challenging day weather-wise. The cold temps and strong winds made things challenging, and I discovered I have more to learn about how to understand the currents and how to use them to my advantage. Nevertheless, by using what I learned from James, I was able to catch a couple of decent female walleye that made my day a great success. Kathy didn’t catch fish, but enjoyed being out in the boat and watching the eagles.
I’ll attach a pic of the 24″ fish I caught. While that’s probably just an average fish to most of you guys, it’s the biggest walleye I ever caught. Besides, it earned me an Everts PB pin! I look forward to bigger fish in the future.
Btw, we fished again Sunday, but only managed one small male that day.
