Each spring as the warm winds and gentle rains of May cause lawns to spring to life, countless homeowners set to work manicuring the perfect lawn. Bags of fertilizer are applied…. far too often the application instructions are ignored. All that extra fertilizer….. composed primarily of phosphorous and nitrogen to stimulate grass growth, ends up running in the gutters towards our lakes and rivers after the first rains.

And our bodies of water, our animals, and sometimes even our children or ourselves, end up suffering due to this widespread and careless misuse.

Bob Koeshall, our Field Staff Reporter on the Petenwell and WI River, has sent us a very well researched and written article on the serious hazards posed by the end result of fertilizer abuse….. algae blooms.

Here’s the link: Blue/Green algae blooms

Thanks much for the article Bob. We all appreciate your time and efforts.
