I’m getting ready to head up to Guttenberg next week to fish. I’ve never been on the river there. I have a paper map from the DNR and a Hotspots map on my Lowrance. Neither one shows many hazards, but I’m worried about unmarked wingdams or anything else. Does anyone have advice for someone new to that body of water.

March 12, 2009 at 1:37 am #757601Jeff Jensen fishes that pool…I’d bet he would be glad to help you out !!
Good luck and keep us up on your venture !!
March 12, 2009 at 1:46 am #757606The biggest hazard that I can think of is the wing dam directly below the boat ramp at the city ramp in Guttenberg. Just be sure to head basically straight out from the ramp, don’t drift downstream, and you’ll be fine.
Go slow until you get the hang of it, and you’ll be just fine!
March 12, 2009 at 1:56 am #757608I would assume your going to launch in guttenberg? If thats the case you wont have to worry about too much. The dam is only 1/4 mile or less up stream. If you plan on heading downstream the usually hazards are present, wingdams, sandbars and rockpiles. There are too many to name or locate for you but if you have fished the river before it shouldn’t be a problem. the channel is marked with bouys and the water level should be fairly stable by next week. The gutt dam is a tricky place to fish. It all depends on how far the rollers are open. they can make some serious waves come out of that dam thats for sure. I affectionitely call the area below the dam as ” The boiler maker”. alot of guys fish the wisconsin side above and below the fishing barge. Below the barge is a series of wingdams that are present. jeff jensen and andy craig fish up there so maybe they will add some better insite. hopefully this helps. Dan
March 12, 2009 at 1:58 am #757610Thanks for the advice Dave. I just want to be careful. I’m taking my 12yr. old son, my brother-in-law and his young son. Hopefully we can find a couple fish and have fun at a “new” place.
BTW- nice northern in previos post!March 12, 2009 at 2:03 am #757613Dan, we’re staying at “the Landing”. Looks nice! I see they have doubled outflow from roughly 25,000 to 45,000, but I don’t know if that equals tricky fishing or not? The only experiece I have on the Miss. was my grandpa used to take me up to Pepin for a few summers.
March 12, 2009 at 2:18 am #757616I’m not trying to scare you but what i’m trying to say is boat control can be an issue. On the iowa side they have a set of rollers that create alot of waves and strong current. the wisconsin side is a bit tamer. if you get above the barge there is an eddy hole that can be awesome at times. But again can be tricky to fish. Most guys will anchor and pitch jigs. You can get bobbed up and down and twisted and turned. Also there may be 100 boats up there all doing differant things. be sure to bring some 1 oz or more jigs. Ive heard that chartruese and white plastics have been doing well. With all the recent rain I havent heard many reports. I wish you luck, Dan
March 12, 2009 at 2:38 am #757623Thanks Dan. It will be a learning thing for us, but looking forward to it. I’m sure we will try jigs, blade baits, three-ways and might try bottom bouncers if we can troll or drift.
Any other advice from everyone is much appreciated. If you see us up ther next week, say hi. We will be in a 17ft. black Lund Fisherman.March 12, 2009 at 2:39 am #757624Guttenberg water level
JD is correct when he says the Gutt. can be a bear. The float was not in last Saturday but should know more by Fri.night. If it gets too rough the float would be a good option for your son to get a few bites. The water is still plenty low for this time of year so just be careful. A few channel markers were out of whack when traveling up river last week end but nothing too drastic. Careful on the Wisc. side if you venture to close to the bank. Not alot of danger but you can get caught in some shallow sand, just stay out a ways and keep your eyes on the depth. If you have anymore questions don’t be afraid to ask.Good luck and be safe
March 12, 2009 at 3:50 am #757650Not sure if any of the upteen boats on P9 have been targeting bass yet but I highly doubt it. By the way….if ice fishing is any hint of what’s to come this summer…bass will be more than plentiful. Please take home all legals (sorry bass guys)
March 12, 2009 at 10:09 am #757665Jake if you use a lil cecil or big mic you can slaughter the bass right now . nothing better than a 3lb bass on 6 feet of line.
March 12, 2009 at 10:26 am #757666WOW !!!
a lot of great info here in this post….I really didn’t know we had so many people that fish Gutenberg…
I may have to get down there and meet up with you guys some day !!!
March 12, 2009 at 12:12 pm #757678I’ve been fishing Gut the last two weeks, before this last water rise, and a lot of small saugers and short walleyes have been caught. Have been able to scratch a limit of saugers of together every trip. Not much size, but a lot action.
I would agree with the above posts about the dam, it’s rough. I try to avoid it when all possible.
March 12, 2009 at 3:22 pm #757758Planning to head there tomorrow for the first time. Have the rollers calmed down since the last water rise?
Thinking about starting the day with some pitching – any suggestions between wingdams or sand? I’m gathering that the Wisconsin side would be the place to start? Are the wingdams south of the boat ramp in Gutt. any good? Thanks!
