Just got home from driving by the river and by the looks of things the water has turned a pretty dark brown and is on the rise due to the recent spring thaw and rain. Hopefully now a daytime bite will be in existance.

As of mid-afternoon,not much coming out of the Vermillion yet.The Trembel and Haycreek are producing a nice mud line.

Water clarity at the damn has not shown any change for now.

So are you hoping for muddy water? Our ice went completely bad in the last 3 days, not much left that is fishable. So Im going to need something to do for the next 6 weeks, it will probably be day trips to Pool 4, so keep us in the loop as the fishing picks up.

I would have to agree with the gin clear. It was my first trip to pool 4 on saturday and I have never fished in the mississippi with such amazing clarity. It was almost like i was fishing in canada on an iron lake. I could see at least 7-8 feet. It was a tough bite and being a newbie it was tough to find where the fish were. We marked some fish but couldn’t get them to bite.

Gotcha, so when that happens, I assume it usually comes with a rise in the river level?

Normally that is the case Nick.We are normal winter low flow and stage.Spring thaw & runoff means more volume and less clarity in the water.

You certainly were not alone in regards to a tough bite Silverstreak. But hopefully you got a feel for the lay out of pool 4 and may be of some help if you ever decide to have a return visit.

I’m assuming those fish that had all day to look at a bait only have but a moment when the water is a little dirtier and therefore become a bit more aggressive when you can get a bait in front of their faces.
Dean, when you have the distinct “mudlines” from input sources and not so much from what’s coming over the rollers from P3, how do the fish tend to respond?

I plan on a return trip and maybe I can find a rider with pool 4 experience . I may hire a guide to see if I can pick up on a few new things.

The dirty water also puts them closer to the bottom and to cover. Also a bit shallower. This makes their strike zone smaller and are more apt take your bait thru reaction rather than giving them time to think about what it is ie..less time to make up their minds. It also wams up the water and makes them more active.
