Making Cribs

I was wondering about the creating of cribs. With Christmas trees avaliable to us, or other structure, can a person make some cribs and place them on the ice with a weight (concrete) to sink it. I know when dealing with Xmas trees to find out if they have been painted ect.

Who would a person talk to if this is a public lake? Local DNR?

Any thoughts or ideas would be appriciated.

    Thanks

I thought that this was illegal for individuals to do. I could be wrong-but I think that in MN you cant do anything to add structure of modify shoreline w/out DNR approval.

    Anyone else know for sure?

I’ve been on some lakes in Vilas County that had cribs and half logs with concrete blocks on the bottom that the DNR put in for smallmouth spawning habitat. Those lakes also had log piles, rock piles, Christmas trees, and the best one……a cluster of about 20 artificial plants sunk in 4-6′ of water. Kinda like a man made weed bed. Interesting thing is that I caught fish off of all of them in the spring.

About the legality…check the regs or ask Warden Stone. He’s like our personal ‘answer guy’.

If you’re talking Mississippi River, try the DNR office in LaCrosse. 608-785-9000. Ask for Water Regs and Zoning.
