I’m looking to buy a new a new digital camera to haul around in the boat. I’m truly not very knowledgeable on the subject. Can anyone offer some guidance on features, brands and prices? Thanks…..B

I bought a Olympus 490-D .It’s not waterproof or anything like that but it takes excellent pics and has a timer feature for those times your by yourself. The software that comes with it makes the whole thing very user friendly,

I would second the vote for the olympus 490. I absolutely love it. It takes excellent pics and is very user friendly. It is a great camera to show your boat partners how to use. I always view there shots before putting the fish back, that way I make sure I have a good pic prior to the release. If it is sub-par we reshoot a few more shots.

I have been using an Olympus D-460 for 18 months now, nothing but fantastic. Truly point and shoot and easy to figure out, did so over dinner one eve. When the battery packs run out, buy the lith ion energizers and they will last for about 250 pics, and cost less than ten bucks at a “-mart”.

In my opinion, which is not the gospel by any means when it comes to digital cameras. You need to decide how big of photos you want to get out of the camera. If it’s strictly for emailing pics and posting to a web page for fun, a 1.3 megapixel camera will be just fine. If you think you’ll want to get these pics actually developed, then you should go with a 2.1 megapixel, minimum. I see they have 5.24 megapixel cameras out now, but I really don’t see the need for such high resolution. Another feature that is important is the optical vs. digital zoom feature. The higher the optical zoom, the better. I’ve got the Kodak DC215, a low end digital, that takes good enough pics for the boat and to send via email.

    Good luck with your choice!!

Any of you guys know anything, good or bad, about the Sony Cybershot camera that uses a CD-Rom instead of a memory stick to record the pictures? You just pop it into the drive to view the pictures.
