Lakeland Beach asbestos contamination

A pollution problem could bring a new boat launch to the St. Croix. Anyone been reading about the huge asbestos contamination problem on the Lakeland Beach just north of the I-94 bridge? News reports suggest it’s the same unusual type of asbestos that was removed from a major remodeling job at the house that borders the south side of the beach in 1997. Although they haven’t found the criminals who buried the asbestos on the beach, there is talk now that it may force the permanent closure of that beach. That would be a real shame if the dirtbags who polluted that beach get away with this, and an even bigger shame if it results in one of the few public beaches on the St. Croix being closed. There is some good news for St. Croix anglers, though: the beach is a prime location for the long-awaited public boat launch on the St. Croix to replace the old “unofficial” NSP launch that was closed a few years ago. And if the beach is closed for asbestos contamination, the city and DNR are considering it for a boat launch. So all you St. Croix anglers who want to see another public boat launch on the river might want to keep a close eye on this situation. Seems like a natural if the Lakeland Beach is closed.
