So I thought I would start a new conversation here. I know this is a river site but thought this would make for good conversation. I was reading Outdoor News tonight and came across an article about spearing. I have always wanted to get into this hobbie. I had a couple of questions. Like, can I build my own shack? What will I need to get started and what can I expect to pay? Is there a special license? I was also curious as to what everyone thinks about spearing in Minnesota. I know you Wisconsin guys can’t spear but am sure you have an opinion about it! I know there are many different opinions so lets hear the pros, cons, and opinions!

    Thanks for any inputs.

Spearing is an awesome sport, but highly controversial. I personally love sitting in the shack watching all the other fish come through the hole. You’ll see all sorts of species. It’s like watching tv. I haven’t done it for a few years now cuz of time constraints, but would love to get back into it. The controversy is that spearing takes too many big pike. Simple solution: selective harvest. If the MNDNR adopts the new bag limits they are proposing, it will be harder to spear. I believe the last numbers I heard were 3 fish with one over 30″. It’s hard to release a fish once it’s speared!!! So that will have an effect on spearing if that passes. If you have never done it, give it a try. There is nothing like watching a 10-15-20lb fish swimming just feet below you! As far as cost, all you need for a shelter is something big enoug to cut a 2’x3′ hole or so and something that doesn’t let any light in. The license is $10 I think in MN for spearing. Note: you’re not allowed to spear and angle in the house at the same time. Awful tempting, but you can’t do it!

I agree with Steve, it’s an awesome time. I haven’t done it for 4 or 5 years now. Used to do it up on Lake Oahe for big pike. I never actually hit a fish, but got to see some monsters. Plus it’s fun to mess around with the perch ect… while you’re waiting for the pike to come through. I guess in MN you can’t fish/spear at the same time though.

A dark house wouldn’t cost a guy much to build. The key, is to keep as much light as possible out of the house. Makes for much better viewing. The spears are relatively cheap.

But like Steve stated, it’s becoming more and more controversial. I would try and find someone with a spear house and give it shot. That would save you the investment in case you decide it isn’t for you. Good Luck!!
