As everybody knows, it takes a good bit of practice to get comfortable with bait-casting reels. If you had to go on the muskie fishing trip of a lifetime and couldn’t bring a bait-caster what would you bring?

I have never used spinning reels for muskie but if I had to I would probably use one of the larger penn reels. They are designed for saltwater so they would probably work for muskies.

    SteveO,

Don’t know the price of a Penn, they are good, but I’d look into a Shimano Sedona 6000. 4000 series at the smallest but a 6000 would handle it. Also, the Baitrunners are used for bigger fish and should be able to handle muskies. Sedona 6000 new should be around $70.00 after sales tax (at the VERY most) and gets my vote because I’ve had GREAT performance out of my 4000, 2000, and 1000 series.

we used to fish what we called musky ultra lite.. which we used up on LOW, where the musky were so pressured by standard musky gear that they really responded well to something lighter… we used 9′ surf casting rods with big Penn reels….. works pretty good… back then we did not have super line for an option… and hvy mono just dont set hooks like dacron….. but the musky sure responded to the lighter line and tackle….. the big spinning rigs gave us at least a prayer…….. and those big penn reels are tough…. they could really take a beating….

I really enjoy my 2 Shimano TX 4000 series. Great front drag system and large spool capacity, plus they aren’t as expensive as most!
