I started out the day Tuesday fishing for bass and trying to refine some swim jig trailers and techniques. What I found was a fun pattern for catching some pretty nice pike.
Nothing fancy, but after it was pretty clear there wern’t a lot of hot bass chasing my swim jig, so I started just retrieving the jig over the matt and then killing it on the deep edge, letting it free fall, and then working it more like a traditional jig for a few bottom hops.
Man, did the pike cooperate. The first one was a nice one! I didn’t get a measurement (sorry no pics) but he was clearly well over 30″ and about as thick as my leg. I’m guessing 10-12 pounds.
After that it was simply a matter of working that deep weed edge and catching “nice” pike (no hammer-handles). I didn’t count, but I caught several good pike on different weedlines (with current). Amazingly I didn’t lose any swim jigs, but I know that’s just luck.
They really seemed to like a 5 or-6 inch worm as a trailer. I guess I was basically fishing a “jigworm.”
So anyway, there is some fun pike action to be had on those edges. (also caught some decent bass doing this, but the pike stole the show)
