I’ve read a significant number of posts, both here and on FTL, regarding trolling crankbaits, etc. My question is this: If a guy were to go out and get a trolling reel and pole, what would people recommend? I would expect a reel to have a built-in line counter as my only mandatory criteria….all opinions welcome…thanks.

Take a serious look at the Diawa SG27LCW reels. Tried and true favorite reel for most serious trollers.

Rods, depends on your trolling style. Are you planning to pull planner boards?

    My recommendation is the following:

    Reel: Diawa SG27LCW

    Rod: St.Croix Tidemaster TC76MF

You probably wont find that rod in the stores. You can order them directly from St.Croix’s website or a St.Croix catalog.

I have 4 of these setups and love them.

Definately go with the Daiwa reel. If you want a more affordable but quality rod, Bass Pro Walleye Angler Trolling/Planer rods are great. I know quite a few people that run them including myself.

I agree with Mike T on the rods. The bass pro rods are inexpensive and are telescopic wich make for easier storage. The diawa line counters are a must, spool up some 30lb test 6lb diameter spider wire braid and you’ll be set.

    See ya on the river!

Ok I guess I will be the odd ball out of the bunch but I would say if you want something that will never fail your needs go with the OKUMA Magda Pro it is one of the best line counters out there and has excellent gear Ratio and as far as rods go I would go with a 8-10ft glass st.croix.

I have had exelent results with with the Diawa line counters. they have stood up to heay abuse!

Peragon makes an exelent 10 ft trolling rod for under 40$. I think about 30$…. soft enough to cushion fire line but stout enough to reed the action of your cranks in the rod holder….4 seasons in red wing caries the rod.
