Im putting this in the general area…. because even though I have focused on walleye… everything has been biting……
Ive been out several times over the last couple of weeks…. action has been fair to good, but its tough to target species…. everything seems to be piled into the holes….. Ive been working one really deep hole (up to 70!)…. and Ive caught lots of walleyes (all under 15′), numbers of smallmouth, mostly around 12 inches… but up to 18″, numbers of crappies 8-12″, two muskies 2′ & 3′, lost a nice Northern at the boat (looked like 7-8#)…..
can catch fish all day, but it really picks up right around sunset… Ive been fishing a current break along the drop into the pool at 15-15’… fish are stacked up on the fish finder…..
green and chartruese have been the best colors…… and a variety of stuff have worked…. small jig/minnow, 3 ways w minnow, jiggin spoons, blade baits, tube tails, twister tails,
had one guy tell me he caught and released a 53″ northern trolling a crank in the area I was fishing… but the math for weight on that fish makes that claim a bit suspect (were talking state record class!)…. others have claimed to land musky and lose musky and see musky…. and with my boat landing two of them I conclude that there are a number of musky up there and they are snapping right now……
launching a boat is the biggest pain… for those who insist on using large boats be prepared to back your tow vehicle all the way into the river, its quite shallow and clear right now, Ive seen a number of large boats launched and recovered, but I dont think a good time was had in the process!!!!
the only keeping walleye Ive seen taken were taken right at dark, in shallower water along rock, I feel that fishing nights with plastics or cranks would be your best bet for nice walleye at this time…… but theres plenty of action to be had…. I sure had lots of fun…. and the croix IS beautiful particularly up in that area……
