I’ve decided to invest in some guidewear. I’ve got a budget of $500.00. What brand would you invest in? Is Bass Pro better than Cabela’s? I want the insulated version because I just bought a high quality rainsuit for the warmer temps. Bibs or pants? Parka or Bomber style. Need a little advice since I’ve never invested this much in outerwear before. I know this was on an earlier thread but I can’t find it now.

    Thanks!

I have owned the Cabelas Guidewear brand for 2 years now. I have the uninsulated kind and bought it big enough for layering clothes in cooler weather. I have used this in weather into the 20’s in the spring and fall and with the right layering I do not get cold. I did buy the bibs and feel they give better protection from the wind and rain. I also bought the parka for the same reason. I have been pleased with my purchase and will do it again when necessary.

I’m leaning towards the Cabela’s right now. Just wanted to get a few opinions.

    Hi

I bought the Bass Pro Shops 100mph parka and bibs 1.5 yrs ago and it was an awesome investment as I never have gotten wet no matter how rough the conditions were…and at time they were rough w/ huge waves and storms out there…they aren’t insulated….but that is cuz i have a columbia parka and bibs for winter that again was the best winter set i bought cuz i’m never cold in it…

If your going to buy cabelas, then I recomend going and trying on various sizes and lengths( reg. or tall). Yuo also will save yourself $20 on the price of the pants and jacket($40 total) since they set the retail price lower then the mail order.

I’ve never owned the other brand but the Cabelas guide wear, I’ve got the insulated stuff, is a terrific investment. VERY durable and stops the wind dead. I’m rarely cold in mine and I fish when I shouldn’t. You’ll never regret the purchase.

I also endorse Cabelas Guide Wear. I remember the days of layering with wool and fleece. Those were some cold, wet days werent they, well not anymore. I dont think my teeth have chattered once since then. Id recommend the insulated jacket and bibs.

I have recently had a problem with my Guide Wear that I am going to get checked out. The webbing (Pockets on the inside) have worn through in less that 6 months! I don’t think that should happen. Otherwise, they are great!

Steve Hougom, any chance we could have a pole on guidewear? How about a listing of all the brands we now are using and how well they are working for us? Hawger

Amazing. Its like we read each other’s mind. I just finished setting up the new poll on the homepage and it involves guidewear. Then I come in here to check the board and here you are asking me about a guidewear poll. I just finished it, it will run about 10 days. I dont know of many brands so I gave people the choice to pick an other brand or whether they do not own guide wear.

Cool …Steve, you are right on the ball!

I have been in a Columbia quad parka/bibs for many years. I use it for ice fishing and rain. It has kept me snug as a bug… but… I have had a problem with snaps pulling through the fabric. They replaced the whole suit once… and now it has happend again. I am hesitating to send it back for the same problem, though Columbia has a lifetime gaurantee.

I would like a lighter rainsuit for warmer weather, the outfit I use is bulky and too warm. So, I am excited to have EFN talking about this topic. I am thinking new for Christmas! Thanks for the fast and good work. Hawger

SteveO, I have had great luck with my Cabela’s Guide Wear over the past 4 years. You mentioned pants or bibs and I would definately suggest bibs, especially if you are using them in cooler applications. The bibs go over the other stuff you may be wearing underneath so much easier. Seems like you are always having to pull up the dumb pants which is a pain, especially when you are layered to any extent. Plus the bibs just plain seem warmer and dryer during the nasty conditions you tend to wear them in. My 2 cents worth.

Sounds like Cabela’s is the way to go! Thanks for your input.
