How do you replace line guides?

Seems that all I do is ask questions on this board, but since this is the premier fishing brain trust here goes again. I broke a guide on my Fenwick rod this spring and need to replace it. How on earth do you get the old pieces off? It seems like it is epoxy and tough as nails. Any ideas??

You carefully cut through the epoxy and wrappings and peel the old stuff off. Easy so far…. unless you nick the graphite and then you’ve buggered up your rod but good. Then you’ll need to buy a replacement guide and learn to wrap the guide in place and apply the epoxy. Not so easy. The best solution is to take it to a custom rod builder and they’ll do it for a small fee and they get it done right. If you’re near Rochester, Hooked on Fishing on HWY 63 near Shopko north could do this for you in “two shakes.”

Thanks for the advice James, but I am in the ‘burbs of Chicago. I guess I’ll try the yellow pages or one of the local sports shops. Thanks again.

The place on the .net to go for rod building and repair is http://www.rodbuilder.org. I’d post your predicament there and see if anyone in that area can provide you with a recomended repair person.

Excellent advice. You’ll likely have a truck load of choices in and around Chicago.

FYI.. I took a rod into a shop to repair a broken guide – one of the single foot guides on a Fenwick – and they were able to slightly heat the epoxy, pull the broken foot out with needle nose pliers and then slip the new guide right back in. No cutting/wrapping etc… Still works good to this day…

If the break allows that to be tried, hey, it’s a great idea. I’m not sure why I didn’t think of that… Stewart and I just did that nearly same thing on one of his rods this week.
