I can’t seem to find the answer to these questions in the Coast Guards “Rules of the Road” book. Can anyone help here?

On the Mississippi, all of the daymarker lights have been changed to a flashing light. How does the CG decide which daymarkers get a light and which ones doen’t?

Also, on Pool 3 (at least) there is one GREEN flashing light that isn’t on a daymarker. It’s about a half mile up stream of L&D No 3…on shore. What does this green light mean?

Now I should have know it would be in the light list!

Hey Ted…what’s up with the TWIC (or whatever it’s called) card? Are we going to be required to have one? Do you have any idea of the costs?

    Thanks for dropping by!

The TWINK (he he)is more of this administrations efforts to get every person in the US to electronically identified. They want to do about the same with ALL recreational boaters! because the CG comander sees EVERY recreational boat as a bomb. I will keep you posted on this as more evolves. At this time it is saber rattling but could be pushed through.

Thanks again Ted and do keep us informed…we have at least 10 Merchant Marine Officers on staff that I can think of and I’m sure many more viewers.

Here’s some good info (although this is not required…yet.)

    Quote:

    Who must get a TWIC?

An estimated 750,000 individuals will be required to obtain a TWIC. This includes Coast Guard-credentialed merchant mariners, port facility employees, longshoremen, truck drivers, and others requiring unescorted access to secure areas of maritime facilities and vessels regulated by the Maritime Transportation Security Act.

For more info check out TWIC FAQ’s<<

PS I found the info on the lights exactly where you told me to look.

Dayboards (I call them day markers) may or may not be lit. If they are lit, they will have a green or white light and on the nun side (right side going up stream) red or white light. The nun side will always have two flashes and the green- can side will have a single flash.

The square green day board with a single flashing green light…that I was looking at signified the center of the river channel.

I also found out the checkered diamond shaped day boards signafy the crossing of the river channel from one side to the other.

I ‘spose this might be a little droll for the daytime boater…but seeing these markers every night peaked an interest…I might need to fish more…
