Fun Day on Pool 2

Spent part of the day on P2 fishing around the 494 bridge. Shades of last fall, there’s very little current flowing. With the strong gusty South winds boat control was tough today. I set up along some rip rap and was clipping along UP river due to the wind. Weird. Anyway the first thing I see is a firetiger #5 Shad Rap in the rocks. I thought….this is an OMEN…..This is THE BAIT. The river WANTS me to use this bait! So I tied it on and proceeded to catch White Bass, numerous Smallmouth up to 16 inches, and several of the biggest Sheephead I’ve ever caught. The biggest Sheepie dragged my deliar down to 6 1/2 pounds! No Walleyes or Saugers, and no action at all on the wingdams. And it was nice to come home with more tackle than I left with.

Some days it’s just fun to catch fish…maybe not “desirable species”, maybe not big or trophy sizes. Just lots of bites.

We fished up by the confluence for a few hours on sunday. Tried trolling shorelines for walleyes. Not a lot going there either. Picked up 3 small walleyes. The 3 we did find where hanging on either rock or gravel bars. Someone must be hoarding all the bigger walleyes on pool 2 right now.

Mike, I think some of them locked down to pool 3. I did hear of a big one found floating by the 494 bridge recently which is too bad.

Pool 2 was fairly slow for us yesterday. Started around the 494 bridge hitting wingdams. Couple sheep and a catfish was all we got. All on a jig with a leech. Nothing on cranks.

Headed up by the Watergate Marina and trolled cranks from there to the dam. 5 or 6 small walleyes on #5 silver/purple cranks.
