Pool 2 has had a good hatch of mayflies over the weekend. Anyone else been seeing them? Not sure how they effect the walleye fishing on the river but it sure has been a slow weekend for me on pool 2.

Pool 7 had a hatch also. It has really helped the Bass bite! Not that it needed much help though.

I saw them too. Oh wait, I was fishing with you

I can’t imagine that a population of fish would ignore a concentrated food source like a bug hatch. It has to affect things to some extent.

Great sharing a boat with you yesterday Mike!

P10 also. Walleye bite was slow. Caught one small walleye, but did manage 3 16-17″ keeper saugers Bluegill bite was hot and managed a few nice gills to bring home

The bite was a bit slow for me as well. The weather and people watching was top-notch.

The river traffic was buzzing on Saturday…

Hey guys, I happened to be driving from LaCrosse to Lansing Saturday between 8:15 and 9:00pm. From just south of LaCrosse to about Genoa it was like driving thru a snow storm with black flakes. South of Genoa they weren’t that thick. I was afraid to turn on the windshield wipers because I figured all I’d have was a smeared mess. When I arriverd in Lansing, I went straight to the car wash to clean up the windshield.

Launched down at TI on Friday PM.

There was a huge swarm hanging out at the launch at 4 in the afternoon.

Fishing was slow for us. Caught 1 21″ just as we were getting ready to pull the poles.

    Just dug up this fact:

The mayfly belongs to group 1 taxa, or pollution–sensitive animals. This means if mayflies are in or around the water, the water should be good quality, perhaps even good enough to drink without distilling or boiling.

    Drink the Mississippi????

    I think I will pass.

I’m not sure of the effect of a hatch on walleyes, although I’m sure that there is some effect, we had one of the best late June days I’ve ever had on the river saturday after driving through six inch high piles of ’em going through the locks up to three.

Wow, six inch piles of them. That is a lot of mayflies. I thought the bite on pool 4 was off sunday. We did find a hot bite for white bass though. The were feeding close to shore in a shady area where may flies were dropping in the water. They were picking them off the water as fast as they hit. I pulled up on shore on tapped a big shrub causing a bunch of mayflies to fly and drop in the water after the action slowed. This helped to prolong the hot bite. There was even a couple largemouth and crappies mixed in feeding in that spot.
