Has anyone ever netted and used shad as bait? It seems like they could be awsome. Maybe better than the stuff we buy in the stores?

We have used them for crappie. Absolute dynamite!

Someone asked this question a while back and I never saw a reply. Can we sein minnows from the mississippi legally? Such as a through net.

I would learn how to use a throw net if I knew shad would work better than fatheads and shiners. A person would first have to learn where to find the bait, catch them, then move on to the game fish. I believe salt water fisherman have been following this methodology for years. What I don’t know is how common and easy to find shad are in the St. Croix and whether or not they are anything special as bait. Hopefully someone will respond that has tried it.

Im pretty sure its legal to use shad for bait…. but I think they are not very hardy…… as for catching them… check the regs on catching live bait, depends on what state your talking about…. and border waters might even be different……

if you just want to catch shad go the NSP plant in bayport just before freeze up. There will be millions in the warm water discharge. They show up there again in the spring right after ice out too.
