I had a neat experience on the Croix last night. After spending two hours searching for walleye with jig and minnow I headed for one of my ‘spots’. When I got close I noticed what looked like hundreds of seagulls circling and landing on the water. As I approached I noticed fish swirling the surface everywhere. I though here we go, massive minnow invasion so I started throwing minnow baits. A few casts , no action. Ok so my bait is not matching. Match the hatch. Change again, nothing. Change again, wham. A 27″ northern.(nice fight by the way) Cool I got the match now. After many casts and even seeing a floundering shad on the service nothing would bite. I started thinking how strange it was there were also tons of mallards going berserk as well. Savage meat eating mallards? That’s not right. Hey wait a minute. The seagulls, fish and mallards are all eating the same thing and my boat is now covered with them. FLYING ANTS!!!!! I’m outa here……
