i am going to be fishing pool 5 this coming weekend and would like to purposely target some northern pike, my nephews are coming along and have never caught a pike before. does anyone have any ideas as to where and how i should fish for them? we are going to mainly target walleyes and stripers, but i thought some pike might make it more interesting for them. if anyone has any ideas i would love to hear them. thanks in advance for yor advice.

I only fish pool 5 a couple times a year but we’ve always found northerns hanging in the slack water below wingdams and closing dams. Casting cranks is how we usually catch them. I have a friend who caught a muskie on pool 5A this past September below a closing dam just off the channel at the head of a slough. I fished pool 10 below Lynxville yesterday with my Dad and I caught 2 northerns on wingdams. One came on a 3/4 oz drop jig on a 3-way and the other came casting a crankbait.

jointed shad rap. them yesterday in 4 hours my buddy and I put 12 (30 inch average) in the boat. which we were very happy with seeing as how we didn’t have a net so we had to let the tire themselves out before we could land them The past few weeks over 30 have been landed all on that lure. if nothing else seems to be working the always hit the jointed shad rap. troll or a retrieve with a little pause. it all seemed to work I even put 5 in on the river about a week ago.

Eyehunter, was the grass very bad yet? I heard it got kinda nasty on the weekend down toward clayton. Much luck on the walleyes up that way?

O, I’m going to hit the river down here as much as possible this week… we’ll have to compare notes. How far north of the Cities are you looking to go on your smallmouth trip in August. My fiend lives in Aitkin and he might know of something up there, but that may be farther up the Mississippi than you want to go. Good luck. Tut

Those damn northerns. All I want to do is fish some slop for bass, and every few fish a big northern bites off my frog or swim jig or whatever. I suggest using a leader.

If the pike are costing you lures give this stuff a try >>>> http://www.tygerleader.com/

Braided titanium. You can tie normal knots with it and I’ve never had a bite off when using it.

I will second tygerleader. It is just as easy to twist the ends and heat with a liter to make your knot. The stuff welds itself together!
