Replica mounts

On a recent outing I caught an exceptional smallie. Shade over 19″ but really fat. It went close to 5 lbs. I turned him loose, but got a fantastic photo of it. After studying the photo, I think I’d like to get a mount made. I’ve only got a frontal shot of it. Will this be enough for a taxidermist to work with? Is there anybody in the Hudson WI area that you guys could recommend?

    Thanks

NIce Fish! Send her in, I’d like to take a gander at her!!! If the Photo is clear and you measured all of the dimensions, it should be enough for a good “taxi-man” to produce a replica! With out length width given, you might be dissapointed with the results.

    What did you catchit with/on?

I caught this fish on the Flambeau Flowage. I measured and weighed it and put it back. The fishing was fast and furious and I didn’t realize what a nice specimen it was until I got the photo back. I really didn’t think I wanted to mount anything under 22″. The girth of the flowage smallie is much greater than I’ve seen out of the ‘Croix and the Flambeau Rivers. No current to fight all the time and a great forage base allows these fish to grow really fat, much like the ones in Cheqaumogan (sp?) Bay.

I caught it on a 4″ garlic scented tube and 1/16 oz jighead.

Quite a fight on a med/light St Croix!!

I have a friend who owns a cabin on the Turtle Flambeau. I have seen what the smallmouth look like. To verify your estimates I would have to say 16 inch smallmouth from the Flambeau are pushing 3lb.s compared to the typical 18 inch 3lb mark elsewhere. True footballs indeed!!!! Still would loike to see a picture. If you can’t find any one close, I would Highly recommend Tom’s Taxidermy for any kind of game mount you do!! Located in Clarksgrove, MN Probably a little too far from Hudson. Tom is a World Champion Taxidermist and Judges s well!!

Congrats on the nice football Steve. Graphites are the way to go. As long as you have length and girth and a pic, a taxi can do wonders. They cost the same as tradional mount(or close) and are way easier to care for. Get dusty…..wipe em off. Plus they look great for yrs….and can be repainted if they fade after a number of yrs….Hoping to hook a fat smallie next week in Boundary waters.

Good Luck on the Boundary Waters, walleyefshr.

Here’s to many “footballs” on your trip. That one I caught looks like one of those big German Brown trout out of Lake Michigan. WIDE

SteveO my friend, you certainly know FAT when you see it! That looks like ol’ Bubba-Dribble-Jowels after a Thanksgiving Dinner!!! 1 more PSI and that poor thing would’ve gone torpedo! :O) Certainly a beautiful speciman and one to proud of! NICE PIG!!!

That is a nice smallie… Don’t know why some places like the Maquoketa and the Flambeau grow ’em so darned fat, but I won’t be complaining!!

Let us know how much it costs you. I’ve seen $10/inch standard, but am looking for a better deal. I’ve got pics of a few fish, including a big pike, that I would like to get replicas of, have the measurements of, but don’t want to shell out that kind of cash!

Took A while to find the brochure for the Canadian company that made my replica mount for my 53″ Northern. The company name is Hawkins Taxiderists. The wbb site is http://www.mytaxidermy.com. It is a good site and all you would need is there. Make sure you read the ‘price’ secton I think you will be VERY surprised at the total cost. Take the time to firgure it out and get a quote from them. I am more than pleased with my mount.

    WOW,

A 53″ pike I would like to see a pic of that if you got one.

I landed a 41″ last year in pool 6 and thought it to be a lunker. 11 more inches and lots more weight again wow!

The replica was quality eh? I will have to check out the web-site

Post the pic if you get a chance just send it to hougie and he usally does the rest. Steve, if I am incorrect about that please correct me.

Some of us were lucky enough to see the pic at the Get Together and get the details on the catch as well. She was a beauty of a beast, horsed in on 20 lb. Power Pro without a leader, and one hand tied behind his back while chasing her down with one foot on the tiller!!! :O) Okay, okay…………..maybe I stretched the details longer than the fish, but it sure was great to be there and chat w/ SKPIKE about the experience!

Thanks for ‘editing’ the fish story KID. It makes me sound like the king of Pike — which I am NOT. To keep the record straight. It was catch on spinning gear using cabela’s Rip Cord 30#. I highly recommend it and PowerPro 6/20# which I used this year to land a 51″ on the same Lake. I did use a leader on both fish a Titanium on the 53 and a very thin braided copper colored one that the guide tied of me. Minor Bay Lodge is a great place for Pike -this year in six days I ahd 30 over 36″ with the 51″ coming back-to-back after a 46″.

I will try and post the picture later today. The 53 was in the record book for a year as the largest SK province C&R.– my 15 minutes in the spotlight. I will try and get a picture up of the mount as I have some film in the camera here at the office.

hi SteveO, nice smallmouth, I’ve done fish taxidermy for the last 24 years as a business hobby. for a reference, give Steve Vick a call. (he is the new manager at Everetts 715 792-2333) I delivered a 46 inch Tiger Musky to him a few months ago. let me know if I can help you. Best of Luck. Jack. 952 322-5258.
